A couple questions about cactus stumps
    #15962968 -

So I really want to take a cutting from my P. Torch. It's about 14 inches right now.

I'm wondering exactly how taking cuttings affects the stump. I.e any growth change, possibility of toppling over from weight of new pups, etc. Any information (especially regarding those two things) would be appreciated.

Awe, hes so thin and cute though; I'd say leave that poor fella alone and invest in some cuttings or something.

Edit: a letter too many -_-

I would love to, but I dont have a lot to invest..  :tearchalice:
(I'm also with parents for another year)
I'd still like to get an answer to the question for future reference

i have to agree , i would never go the hack on such an anoerexic specimen. but if you cant resist , here's what you do...
sterilze a knife by pouring some boiling water over the blade ...
make a clean cut...
leave cut ends out in the sun and wind for some hours to speed up the healing process and you're done.
put the top bit in a cool , darkish place for months until the first roots appear and plant.
the stump in the pot will produce pups from the top and if yer lucky , also from the base.
i have created some fine freaks lately by making 6 inch stumps.

I would let it go through another growth season first before cutting. maybe g.et it to about 2 foot first.

alright, another 8 months I wait then
I still would like to know what the growth of the stump is like after its cut. Does it continue to widen or anything or does it just not grow at all?
Also, this is the second time my cactus has been called anorexic. Do you simply mean it's too young and hasn't widened out enough at the bottom, or am I doing something wrong in growing it?

the stump will expand if you cut it, very slowly over generations of cuttings, but try and leave 6 inches. the top section if cut where it is larger in diameter will grow larger and faster than if you cut it where it's the same diameter as the base. in nature, the tops get heavy, fall over, and reroot with larger bases. the plant sends the majority of it's growth to the tips, so obviously it's going to be beneficial to shorten them if the tops outgrow their bases.
