Re: ID - PNW subbs? lookalikes? [Re: myshkin]

The more I read about subbs, the more I'm doubting that these are them.  For example, several things I've read say that the stems should have little white hairs.  My stems aren't hairy at all.

Are the stems really fragile?

They could be Psathyrella I guess...  I'm kinda doubting it now too after looking at the pictures again. :stoned:

I can only see pan subbs in that pic. After the belted sap, the red stem is the next thing I look at. Then I look at the gills. In a subb, the gills don't dip lower than the cap when you look at it in profile, and in foes, it does

They all look like Panaeolus cinctulus to me.

That's FALSE.

There are more pics of subbs in my gallery that show the gills below the cap.  Mostly on the older ones though, foes will show this when they are young too.  Subbs usually don't.

No bluing on any of the stems.  One of them had a conifer needle stuck to the stem and the green might be what some people are seeing as bluing in the pic.  But I definitely haven't noticed bluing on any of them.

Also, to the person who said they could see nothing but subbs in the pic--even though I had decided not to spore print all these deliberately, a lot of them dropped enough spores to make unintentional prints, and I've picked 15+ mushrooms out due to their prints being brown rather than black.  So there were definitely some foes in there at the very least.  But, even the black ones I'm still unsure about due to the lack of white hairs on the stems.  (To the person who asked if the stems are really fragile, I'd say no, not particularly.)

In any case, this will all be a learning experience if nothing else.
