Psychedelic/progressive music thread
    #12927392 -

Greetings ladies and gentlemen.

I thought it may be enjoyable to share some of our favorite psychedelic/progressive music.

My first recommendation is my favorite band, The Mars Volta.

Secondarily, the solo work by the guitarist of the aforementioned act, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, is extremely delicious. Especially his most recent release called Sepulcros De Miel, which features John Frusciante from RHCP and the amazing drummer (perhaps my favorite after listening to this album about a thousand times) Deantoni Parks.

I would love some recommendations from you guys, as I'm always looking to expand my music collection.

Where'd you get that idea? It's Omar's brother on drums, who also played on Apocalypse Inside... and other releases and who I agree plays super tasty, understated stuff. And thanks for the heads up about yet another release from ORL. As stated in the recent thread in this forum about him, he is my favorite currently active recording artist.

And funny coincidence that here I am again correcting an error of this nature.(A poster in the ORL thread thought Blake Fleming played on Calibration...).

Aaah, just checked and see now where the confusion lies: There is YET ANOTHER new release - Un Escorpion Perfumado, on which Deantoni Parks does play.

So was it Un Escorpion Perfumado or the other new record you were referencing above? If it was Un Escorpion Perfumado, where did you get it? I don't even see it on ORL's bandcamp site.

Holy fuck! I have no idea why I thought Sepulcros had Deantoni on it.

Well shit, now I have great respect for Marcel. Very interesting. Thanks for clearing that up!

And ORL is also my favorite active recording artist. He's a genius if I ever saw one.

Indeed I have not. I was just looking around and I've found that it is unreleased as of now. I think it's gonna be released this year though.

What's your favorite ORL release?

Dang, that's tough to answer. I'm quite fond of The Apocalypse Inside of an Orange, but the very first album is great as well. I'm really groovin on Xenophanes recently though. The album with Lydia Lunch is groovy as hell too. But if forced to pick, I'd go with The Apocalypse.

Volta wise I couldn't pick. I'm a huge fan of every record and just love the group more and more. Octahedron is my least favorite but I still quite like it.

We could even talk ATDI, of which I most enjoy the two EPs, especially El Gran Orgo with In Casino Out being my favorite full length.

Hows about you?

Well were on basically the exact same page with the Volta.

As far as Omar stuff goes, its a tie between Xenophanes and Sepulcros. I really like Solar Gambling as well. Apocalypse is really a groovy as hell album. Omar can get as funky as just about anybody. I'd really like to see him collaborate with Bootsy Collins.

And with ATDI, I really only have experience with Relationship of Command, which is a good album. I really like Cedric's early vocals. They're raw and gritty.

No king, no government ever extended to the people more rights than the people insisted upon. And I think we've come to a place with this psychedelic issue. We have the gay community as a model, and all the other communities. We simply have to say, Look: LSD has been around for fifty years now, It ain't going away. WE are not going away. We are not slack-jawed, dazed, glazed, unemployable psychotic creeps. We are pillars of society. You can't do anything in culture without psychedelic people in key positions. I would also REALLY appreciate one (I can't download torrents at the moment).

A few other psychedelic/progressive bands I like are Tool, Porcupine Tree, Umphrey's McGee...

I'd like to discover some new music along these lines as well.

I love The Mars Volta and ORL's solo stuff, and I'm obsessed with anything John Frusciante.

i am a psychedelic artist. i am mastering my full cd right now, then will be giving it away for free if you want, donations if you like, it's all about the entheogenis message.

psychedelic alternative prog. happy ska jazz punk..... kinda.

every song i make is mood and psychedelic based, lyrics made to communicate a certain insight, no matter how silly it may seem at first.

is anybody interested? i have links, but i don't need to post them if not needed. no reason to spam and advertise.

?

I love the Umph.. they took awhile to grow on me, but once I saw them live on sweet sweet LSD in Asheville, I've been hooked.

As for their studio albums, I really like Mantis and Anchor Drops the most because they're more proggy.. but pretty much anything by them is interesting.

there's a few tracks on my myspace right now.

note: don't be turned off by the 30 fans. lol. i try not to play the popularity game. i had an account with 5000 + friends, and found they didn't care and i was talking to space, plus when they did, the account was my name, so i would have ego battles.

i switched it over and the 30 true fans i had followed. it's better now. one real friend at a time, most other musicians in mutual support.

so the name of the cd is going to be JDB (Jesus, DooBies & BooBies) - as in, jesus was a mushroom, doobies are awesome and well... so are boobs.

and the name is the same. i couldn't believe that, while there's other bands named novelty theory on myspace, none of them copyrighted the name, so i snagged it from bandname.com

<param name="movie" value="
name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src="
type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385">

i also covered the country song "jesus was a mushroom" by the brilliant artist & famous militant earth first movement member, daryl cherney. his is country.

mine is 160 BPM punk.

not all my music is serious.

not all is funny. it's everything lol.

if you liked the song in the video, there's a few more samples up at www.myspace.com/noveltytheorymusic ; (not just novelty theory, that other guy is good too, but not the same. not me. my page is covered in mushroom art.)
and
www,youtube.com/highjinksification.

BACK TO OTHER MUSIC.

did atone know tool writes some of their songs based on mathematical equations? fucking cool.

(edit wtf? i can't get it to just be one video?!? i tried linking from youtube. embedding with the shroomery, and embedding directly from youtube... hmmm sorry guys and girls)
