Lost my XP product key - NEW QUESTION
    #7331456 -

Yesterday I bought a Toshiba a-215 4757 laptop.
Needless to say, I've been spending most of my time tinkering around on the thing, getting it all set up and personalized.
I am growing frustrated with how fuckin' slow this thing is.
It is about as sluggish as my 10 year old desktop computer...but that old comp has an excuse... it is bogged down from an outdated RAM & Processor and from years of being used and abused.

Shouldn't this laptop be running like water?  Lightning quick?
I had a dell inspiron laptop back in 2002 that ran like mollasses when i first got it...  so what gives?
This toshiba's specs are like 4 times as good as the dell inspiron!
Is windows Vista the problem?
Could it really be using that much of my computer's resources as to make a brand new computer run like a POS caveman computer?

I'm really frustrated.
Half venting and half seeking council from my fellow computer using brethren.
Help please?

Try opening up msconfig and shutting down all that 3rd party crapware they install on new computers and see if that solves your problem. Youll need to reboot afterwards, if it doesnt help you can always turn it back on.

First thing that came to my mind

EDIT:It would be helpful if you posted your specs

Well first what version of Vista are you running, home basic or home premium, I think that is that name?

Second how much Memory is in that Laptop. If they sold you some with less than one Gig of Memory you should go and upgrade the ram or trade the Laptop in for something that has one Gig of Memory.

Microsoft claims that you can run Vista with 512 megs of ram, but that is all bullshit. The OS will constantly write the the Pagefile.sys because it is too bloated of an OS, so it needs more memory all the time.

If you ever seen the Apple's MAC commercial with the FAT Microsoft guy walking around that pretty much sums it up. Don't even think about running VISTA with less than one Gig of memory. Further try to shut down as many non essential services as possible. Laptops and computers from big name stores are notoriously overloaded with non essential OS applications that you never use and truthfully are GARBAGE.

Home Premium
Circuit City... $150 below retail.
2 Gig Memory

I did go through this morning and delete most of the useless software that came pre-loaded... is there more crap that I can get rid through more complicated/involved means?  Like, stuff that is more deeply embedded into my system?

Thanks for the replies thus far.  I do appreciate it.

What you are looking for specifically are the services that come on when you turn on your computer. I don't know if Vista has MSCONFIG or not. Try to type in MSCONFIG in RUN from your start button see if that does anything.

Vista needs at least 1 GB of RAM to run comfortably, if you have anything less you will need to upgrade. It also supports a feature called ReadyBoost that lets you use a flash drive as a RAM source, it definitely sped up my desktop machine.

Vista has a program with the same exact functionality as the msconfig tool but I believe it's called simple system configuration. It should be one of the first things you see when you press the windows tab in the bottom left corner. I also believe that this article may help you out a bit.

That is unless you care about playing many PC games developed from now on. DirectX 10 is Vista only, sadly.

Yes it is. Install any flavour of Linux onto it and enjoy an operating system that is not only free and totally loads way better than vista, but wont collect data on you and send it to redmond.

I'm onto the next phase of my computer query.

I tracked down my XP reinstall disc.
It was included with my old dell inspiron. The XP OS was already installed onto the computer when I received it.
That computer has long since crashed and died, and I cannot find the product key for my XP OS reinstall disc.

Question:
How can I circumvent this obstacle?
I technically already purchased and gained ownership of XP, so I don't want to have to pay $300 for a new product, just so I can acquire a legit product key.
Is a warez key generator the safe/smart thing to do?
What about the various linux OS's. Are those worth looking into. Are they easy to learn for a computer n00b?

The key comes on the case of the computer.  OEM keys are not transferable.  I have heard of it working, but never seen it so im suspicious.

Are you a member of Oink's?

Oh...  :foreheadslap:
So that probably explains why they supplied me with a reinstall disc instead of a nifty looking, hologram-laden Installation Disc Set.
So I could just download what I need :smirk: but I wouldn't be able to get support or upgrades, etc.??

It can be argued, but I would say that ubuntu is easier to use than window$.
If you don't play fancy new video games, or depend on any MS only software, you're good to go.
The newest version of ubuntu is especially nice, with the ability to score all the multimedia codecs you need with just a few clicks.

I'd say that ubuntu has achieved point and click n00b friendliness

Plus there is grips of free software.
its beautiful

I created an Ubuntu Boot Disc.
When trying the install Ubuntu, I get an error.
It says my "X Server" (Graphic Interface yada yada yada) is fucked up??
What does that mean?
