Bush nominates Air Force Gen. Hayden for CIA chief
    #5604281 -

http://edition.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/05/08/hayden/index.html

A few questions here:

* Is it alright for a military man to lead a civilian spy agency, especially in times like these?

* Don't you find it dangerous to have a general lead the CIA, making it seem like the CIA is  now under the Pentagon's control?

* Do you realize that now, all the major spy agencies, from the NSA to the Defense Intelligence Agency, are run by military officers?

* Did you know that Hayden, former head of the NSA, defended the legality of the eavesdropping program in December, which, according to many, did not comply with law?

:undecided:

I don't know about you, but I'm a bit concerned...

Is it alright for a military man to lead a civilian spy agency, especially in times like these?

it'll be the seventh time a military officer has been named director of the CIA. nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

the director of the CIA used to be the head of all intelligence, but now he's only the head of the CIA. the head of the US intelligence community is now called the united states director of national intelligence, a position currently held by civilian john negroponte.

Don't you find it dangerous to have a general lead the CIA, making it seem like the CIA is now under the Pentagon's control?

not at all. i'd prefer to have a general leading it.

Do you realize that now, all the major spy agencies, from the NSA to the Defense Intelligence Agency, are run by military officers?

the NSA is an agency under the department of defense and has, since its inception, always been lead by military officers. same goes for the DIA.

this isn't the first time that the CIA, NSA, and DIA have all been lead by military officers. it's the seventh time. however, among these seven times, it is the first time that the overall head of the intelligence community was a civilian.

I don't know about you, but I'm a bit concerned...

you're talking about military intelligence agencies. i'll be concerned when they start appointing military officers as head of agencies like the FBI, ATF, and DEA.

i thought you were a frenchy?

but yes, this is pretty.. err.. scary, but considering that papa Bush basically ran the CIA as well, I doubt it was any different from then to now.

I don't know much about him, but if he's up for an important job in the Bush administration you can bet two things are true:

1) He is incompetent for the position.
2) He is a Yes-Man who will not bring the President bad news. That way Bush will continue to be blind-sided.

Bush reminds me at this point of a punch-drunk boxer whose left eye is puffy and completely shut and whose right eye is well on its way to join the left one.

The man needs a seeing-eye dog at this point, but all he seems to want is another lapdog!

Group think is all the rage at this White House.

They just don't get it.

These people keep bringing in incompetent closed-minded hacks who only serve to reinforce their narrow, rigid, myopic world view when they desperately need someone with "The vision thing".

STOP hiring people with blinders on.
START hiring people with bifocals. That way they can see the world as it really is from the top lens and occasionally glance down below to see the world as their battered boss fantasizes it to be.

Ding ding ding!

Stay down Mr. President, stay down.

so just for the record, putting an air force general at the head of an otherwise civilian position would move us closer or away from a police / military state?

Yep, that was an intelligent and insightful analysis. Perfectly manifesting the classic symptoms of Bush Derangement Syndrome.

Admiral Stansfield Turner, head of the CIA during the Carter administartion. Don't recall hearing any nonsense about a military man then.

by the way, this is the part that really concerns me, more than anything else:

He previously served as director of the National Security Agency (NSA), having assumed that position in 1999. During his tenure as director, the longest in the history of the agency, he oversaw the controversial warrantless wiretapping program.

Clearly. Too bad it doesn't stop you from criticizing him.

He is far from the lapdog you say he is. There is major conflict between him and Rumsfeld. Let's just say Rummy has his favorite generals, and Mr. Hayden is not one of them.

hmm, interesting, i didn't know that. It doesn't come as a big surprise however.

IMO all of this can be seen as being dangerous because it seems like the military-industrial complex is in control of all the spy agencies, which means that if they ever need to misinfom the public again by using falsified information declared as being official because american intelligence says so, then it would be a very easy thing to do. It is these type of people that can and want to use destructive military weapons in the name of security, when really its all about business, and power.

Just my opinion people, no need to shred me apart  :mushroom2:

I wasn't criticizing him per se (that comes later) I was criticizing the way this administration hires people in general. And if someone thinks I'm not giving him the benefit of the doubt they're right. This bunch has a proven track record of hiring people who are in ideological lockstep (some would say "goosestep") over competancy.

Remember FEMA chief Michael Brown? Remember Harriet Myers? Want to know how competant Donald Rumsfeld is? Just pick up a newspaper or turn on your tv set. This is the gang that couldn't shoot straight-Cheney. If you want to know how competant Cheney is just visit your nearest gas pump. That Energy Task Force is really paying dividends (to ExxonMobil shareholders that is.)
