Contamination in wild mushrooms?
    #4742878 - 10/01/05 09:59 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

I searched the site as hard as I could but couldn't find the answer to my question. I've grown my own shrooms before but have never hunted. I plan to soon seeing as how it's in season and all, but my question is this: If I have to completly sterelize every minute little detail when growing them in a jar, how is it that they can simply produce in the wild? Isn't there bacteria outside? Also, I've got a whole lot of spores, so what would be stopping me from just dropping some on some rotting wood or dung in my backyard and making them grow wild outside?

dung has some kinda bacteria in it that fights contamination. that is why teks say to pasterlize the dung mix. to kill mold spores, but leave alive bacteria. pasterlize is to bake at 170 degrees or so for like 3 hours and sterilize is to cook hotter for shorter time.

There is a lot of contamination outside. That's one of the big reasons why mushrooms produce *billions* of spores. Almost none of them end up making it. You can try dropping rotting wood or dung in your yard, but there will be tons of competition among the various fungi and bacteria to be the ones that get to rot it.

Happy mushrooming!

Yep.... Good Ol Mother Nature has her ways.. Cows are the ideal transport for spores.

As the dung hits the ground it becomes the ideal growing medium.

As Tox stated millions of spores are deposited.. But you don't get millions of mushrooms.. many hundreds of thousands just don't make it!
