Re: Cultivation confessional [Re: Kloakk] * 1

I confess that I'm feeling a bit sad that nobody seems willing to answer any of the questions I've asked in this thread:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/29632266

Guys, I'm doing the best I can with what I have. I've been living on the road for the past ten years (that's why I stopped growing mushrooms). I made the decision to earn my living exclusively as a street performer (physical theatre). I don't own a house or a car. What I do have is a wonderful life partner who shares both my profession and my lifestyle, a backpack, and a tent. Whatever time and little money I have left goes into education. And yes... I'm genuinely happy.

This year we've been hit by an extraordinary heatwave across the country, so we can't work on the streets. 39–42°C (102–108°F) is no joke. So we're spending this season at a circus friend's house. Since I'm settled in one place for a while, I decided to get back into mushroom cultivation, and I was really excited about it.

But "the best way to do it is..." — I already know. The best way to grow mushrooms is to build a proper mycology lab. But no matter how much I'd like to, I simply can't even think about buying a pressure cooker, a dehydrator, Petri dishes, a laminar flow hood, a magnetic stirrer, automation equipment... I have to prioritize being able to eat and contribute to household expenses. I'm not an idiot.

So I'm just asking for a little understanding. I'm not being stubborn — I simply have limited resources.

Hugs.

maybe break up your questions into short pieces and post in relevant threads to increase your chances of replies (esp 'quick questions ')

I moved a tub recently to a friend's basement because my apt is too hot. if you can find a cooler location somewhere...

you can do without a flow hood for sure, and in 40C probably without a dehydrator too

good luck

Hey 'ill help you out ane this is perfect timing ive been planning to make a writeup for years as a Tek for how to succesfully have consistent results working with agar even if you're homeless or live inside a car. Because at thw wns of the day you DO NOT need electricity nor a pressure cooker to be able to work with agar cultures and to sterilize BRF cakes and to inoculate those in stwrile enough conditions, and your fruiting chambers dont need electricity either.

What I rwcommend you do is create a new thread and name it "how to grow with minumal resources" or whatever and ill be posting responses there for all your questions ok?

Thanks a lot, Mateja.

I think it's a great initiative.

Should I repost what I've already written in the other thread over there?

While I'm at it, I'll also attach a few of the photos I still have from "the old days." I'll check my old laptop later—I should have a few more on there.

I appreciate your position. The problem is that few people are equipped to comment on it. The situation right from the outset is not ideal. No one wants to give advice in situations like that. Cause then if it does badly all we can say is "get a PC and do it properly."

In your situation the best choice is probably get a grow bag and a syringe from trusted sources. But better advice would be to just go buy some shrooms and grow when you can do it properly.

I might want to start an aquarium and have a shark in it. But I'm broke so I'm just gonna get the shark and keep it in the bathtub. It should be okay right? How can I achieve my dream of shark ownership without spending money on a big ass aquarium and equipment?

Im not diagreeing you per se Pasty, I just think that this could be a very educational opportunity to show what mushroom cultivation really entails and how easy it could be. I'd never be recommending stuff of I didnt know from personal experience that its doable with reasonably high success rate (more than reasonable actually) for which reasons do I claim this? For these:

1) PC is not needed for sterilizing liquids such as Agar or LC

2) All metal tools such as scalpels can be sterilized by boiling, no PC needed (ive never owned an induction scalpel sterilizer and never flamed any needle or knkfe blade except 2-3 times the first month i grew shrooms

3) BRF cakes can be sterilized by boiling in a regular pot for 2h, ive done it a handful of times with great success and others before me have done it with great success

4) A SAB can be used anywhere where its not windy

Now im not encouraging anyone to lower their standards or to settle with bare minimun, everyone that knows me here knows that im not about that, if I was I wouldnt be innovating and dismantling decades old misinformation.

Im just saying, perhaps there should be a thread out there that shows (for example) homeless vets that suffer from PTSD how they're able to grow their own shrooms evwn if they live in the woods or under a bridge, cause all they need is a pot, fire wood and a plastic tote (plus other easily sourced stuff that dpnt need electricity)

This has been a goal of mine for the longest to create this writwup espwcialøy for homeless veta (whom I always will habe a soft spot for for personal reasons) anyway thats what I think about this i hope i get suppport for doing this and not backlash, cause i dont think it will be as unproductive as it might appear on the surface :mushroom2::heart:

Just include a summary post explaining that you have bare minimun resources, dont write your entire background and story lol make it accessible for new posters to check out

No, my friend. It's not about eating mushrooms. That was never the issue. But comparing mushroom cultivation to owning a shark... that's a comparison I just can't wrap my head around.

I'd say it's more like playing a Pearl acoustic drum kit versus four trash cans and a few tin cans. They both keep the beat.

You know, the difference I see—and what I find a little sad—is that, in the past, the mushroom growing community presented cultivation as something accessible. You could get started with €10, learn, make mistakes, develop patience, spark your curiosity, and... end up with your own mushrooms. It was never just about eating them; it was about the whole process.

Now, though, I get the feeling there's a strange kind of dogma in the air. You can almost smell it. And paradoxically, everything has become less accessible.

I say all of this with genuine respect.

In the end, I came to this forum to share my excitement, clear up a few doubts, and, if possible, be part of the community — not to become materialistic.

A few more photos I managed to rescue...

There was no SAB, not even a 15Psi...

Steam and boiling water can do okay for sterilization . . . If you live near sea level. Would not recommend for someone living in the mountains.

If someone wants to insinuate that I'm dogmatic keep in mind I grew shrooms in a bathtub just to say I did it. And yhe comparison of a drum kit made from trash cans is fine, but in that case it mostly depends on whose drumming. Someone who is already a master drummer can make those trash bins bang like they were made for it. Put a novice on them and chances are all anyone ends up with is a headache.

There's no dogma in the air, and you've been dealt with gently.  You got butthurt and snappy twice after feeling marginalized that nobody wanted to wade through you triangle candle.  It's 2026, you can't buy shit with 10 dollars.

Experience is the tool that substitutes for tools. A veteran can make imperfect equipment work. A novice usually needs good equipment because they don't yet know which mistakes matter.

Excellent point, this didnt even cross my mind, but I do know some mounteneerers that stress the importance on which vegetables to bring because potatoes among other things are impossible to boil at certain heights, even if you boil them for 2h they're still hard

I live at a high enough elevation that none of the old school boiling and steaming tricks ever worked. I tried steaming LC for 2 hours once and had a wonderful Bacillus broth a week later.

Yes this is the crucial point, at least Belintaf has grown cakes with reasonable success in the past and should be able to pull it off if he follows instructions to the T.

Again, I have always wanted to make a writeup for growing cakes with absolute minimum equipment for those that absolutely are unable to go any other route.

Kudos to you for volunteering. I remember once helping a guy who lives in Iran. He had serious challenges when it came to materials. For him it wasn't a matter of lifestyle choices, the regime he lived under was holding everything back from him already.

It took a long time but today he has a very skilled grower. Too skilled cause he got busted and is now praying the US overthrows the government.
