any electricians in the house?
    #15180906 -

hey guys, figured there would be someone here that would be willing to help me out.

this is basically what I'm working with. I apologize for it's crudeness.

I hooked this up without a ground and it worked perfectly. With the exception of an uncomfortable tingle when touching ground. The dimmer would also be warm at times. Today I hooked up a ground and nothing  is no power to any of my lights. The black traveler from the first three way switch has no power to it. Now I dont know if that's whats supposed to happen or what, but this seems suspect to me. Circuit still runs now, no pop or tingle, outlets work, but no lights. I'm going to be inspecting my romex with a close eye, but I haven't found anything yet. What should I do now? What may be my problem? Maybe my dimmer is fried? It doesn't smell good at all. In addition the little orange LED that lets you find the dimmer at night is illuminated.

I may possibly run it without a ground again, but I highly doubt that taking my ground off would give that wire power again, and would just be putting me in a dangerous situation.

Hmmm are you using a 3 way dimmer when you only need one? / Is is possible you have the hot for one switch connected and the neutral for another?

Make sure you have your 3way switch hooked up right. People always mess this up. Each 3way should have a spot marked common or a black screw terminal. This is where you hook up the commons. One common is the power coming into the switch. On the other switch the common is the black wire that is going to your light fixture.

On most dimmers the power has to be turned off when you install them or they will fry.

alright guys, I fixed the problem. Seems like the three way dimmer fried when I installed ground. I replaced it with a standard 3 way switch for now until I return my dimmer and get a new one. The power was always off during installation. All of my romex is good and there is no scaffed insulation on any of my wires. I even used the spare conductor I had in the first box and used that as one of my travelers thinking that wire may have shorted. Lesson learned, don't buy the shitty 10 dollar three way dimmers from home depot :uhoh:

Make sure the wattage on you dimmer is higher than the wattage of your lights. Too many watts will burn it up too.
