Is anybody here an electrician or do you know an electrician?

Is it a cool job? Does your friend/relative who is an electrician like it? Does it pay well? Tell me everything you know about the job and the training.

One of my dad's friends is an electrician. He gets paid usally around $25-35 an hour. Just to come over and inspect a job an is automatic $50.

I think it took around 8 months for him to get his degree. He is his own boss. Sets his own rates, hours, etc... All he does is place an ad in our daily newspaper, and waits for the phone calls.

electrical work is great to do. I am in an electrical union but not an electrician I am a telecom tech same union different scope of work. To become an electrician through the union you have to apply for an apprenticship. The apprenticeship is 5 years about 500 hours of classroom time and 10,000hours(five years) of on the job training after that you take your liscense exam when you pass and become a journeyman you can make about $75,000 to 150,000 depending on overtime. Plus you can do sidework for people which is cash in your pocket. Our benefits are top notch too pension, annuity, health, dental, vision

Well, there is a local respected tech school that offers a 16 month electrician's program.  My mom's husband (the Chinese spy... :smirk:) got a 16 month drafting degree from this same school and he earns $45,000 or so a year.  Is it better to do a tech school program or an apprenticeship with the union?

I would say its better (finacially) to go with the apprenticeship. But, it would be easier with the tech school.

well I would say the union because you will get the best level of training and they will make sure you pass your liscensing exam. Plus you work under a contract with union contracts so you get top notch pay and benefits. Plus if you go union you don't technically pay for school you do pay you union dues which go to the school and the running of your Local and National but thee dues are not that high. The union assigns you a job when you join but you start at one level and as you work more hours your pay scale increases at set intervals. If you work non-union they can pretty much pay you what ever they want.

My girlfriend's dad is an electrician...well-paid and loves it.
