You're right, if anyone should have an excellent healthcare system it should be the US. I've tried for some time to wrap my head around all the reasons our healthcare system is so screwy. It is a depressing situation.

Upon my employer's insistence I had to visit an ER a while back after being exposed to mercury at work. It was no more than a broken thermometer's worth but I had to go anyhow. There was some problem with the workers comp though and I ended up with a bill for nearly $300 and all they did was take my blood pressure then send me home. I'm still struggling with getting workers comp to attend to that and I am afraid it may take an attorney to get it all sorted out now; in which case I may as well just pay the damn bill, fuckers.

I had the pleasure of visiting the ER again this past week after I started passing blood in my urine. I was assigned a room immediately and gave them a urine sample. They came back 2 hours later, informed me that I had urine in my blood, stressed that it could be serious and that I should seek medical attention for it. They then promptly discharged me. I was livid, no shit; I have blood in my urine? I told you that damn it so tell me something I don't know!

I haven't received that bill yet but I am dreading it. After further tests I still don't know anything more than that my left kidney has an excess of fluid collected in it. On to yet another doctor in search of vague answers I suppose.

A good healthcare system is weorth paying a bit more taxes for.

I'm a member of the Shroomery for five years and every now and again people have adverse drug effects or took too much or have non-drug health problems.. and they keep putting off going to the hospital because of the huge bills.

Most live in the USA, the wealthiest nation in the world.
Outrageous. Third world nations have free public transportation or free education for children and the effin US of A charges you $1900 for $1.90 worth of morphine.

As a member an Other Drugs Discussion mod I see shroomerites taking gambles on their health to avoid a hospital bill, all because the richest nation of the world doesn't care for it's citizens health.
Thats just sad.

just watched SiCKO the documentary by michael moore, you shoudl watch it..it's available on the net..was leaked

but this thread just proves how sickning it is to see so many shroomerites on here, not wanting to go to the hospital, cause they don't have health insurance and are gambling with what could be detrimental to their life.

fortunately my parents are well covered and never had to experience any problems with big bills or problems with not being able to see a doctor..i think i had about 4 different types of doctors actually.

but even more fortunate is to live in a country where health care is free for EVERYONE. if you need to fill a perscription, 90% of it is covered by national health.

We pay 15-29% income tax to the federal government, and 5-15% to the province depending on where you live.

We also pay a sales tax of 8-14%, depending on where you live, we pay 14% here in ontario.

You misunderstand. BoO and I are sickened by the fact that your government creates a national health situation that's so bad.

What bugs us is that regular people like you have to take these gambles on health - because when in the USA you get sick, your government abandons you and leaves you unassisted.

Proper healthcare for all is a job for the government. You might have died to prevent a bill. In the richest country in the world you shouldn't have gotten a bill to begin with.

well, first of all, hospitals in america will get shafted by people who can't afford to pay for their treatment. And of course they can't deny treatment, it's against the law, so they charge outrageous prices so whenever someone does pay then that person ends up paying for a themself and some others that didn't pay. At least that's how I've come to understand it.

It is very sad that happens. It is a common problem for people to wait far too long before visiting the hospital and by then their medical issue has either become immensely more expensive than it would have been with earlier treatment or it may prove lethal. It is outrageous that anyone should ever feel hesitant about receiving medical treatment but they do. Even with health insurance one hesitates to visit the ER because it will still cost them a fair amount of money and sometimes their insurance may even deny paying the bill.
I had an Austrian woman staying in my household for a few weeks while she visited the US and her description of their healthcare system fascinated me. Sadly I think if we had any sort of a universal state run healthcare system it would be plagued by the same bureaucracy and piss poor management that afflicts most other endeavors by the US government.

With better money management in other sectors of our government I would be willing to bet that we could easily sponsor a universal healthcare system with the savings.

I'm afraid I don't see the status quo of healthcare being resolved anytime soon though.

You're spending $1.000.000.000 every single day in Iraq. Decide to have your shameful loser cowardly excuse-making dishonorable retreat from Iraq a month earlier and all of America can take their ailments to a doctor for a whole year for free.

You take your problem to the hospital, the hospital fixes it and bills your citizens health insurance which gets paid by your premium and your government. The most basic healthcare is paid by the government entirely through a slight tax increase. The government enforces rules to keep hospital profits down and health standards up. You as the patient don't ever see a bill.

Sounds good no?

Inferior to what? To a system where Joe Average is driven in debt for thousands of dollars if he gets a medical emergency, and Joe Poor dying in the gutter?

Socialism has never been given a fair shake. And the Tribe caring for of their sick and wounded is what kept us alive the past 100.000 years, it's part of what makes us human.

The start of Fascism, the other system, was a massive "euthanasia" program to rid the healthy of the burden of the sick. The USA is already in the phase of abandoning the sick and wounded if they can't look after themselves. Have a heart people.

I dont go to hospitals because modern medicine is just the newest form of
quackery, my experiences have been "we cant find anything on the X-Ray so have
some pills", "the tests are inconclusive so we're going to run more tests, have
some pills", "we've examined the X-Ray and your ankle is not broken, here have
some pills"... my ankle was definitely broken according to the radiologist

I know 3 people that went in for 'testing' to determine if they'd had a heart
attack, the first was my mother, she read the waiver of liability that mentions
shooting her up with chemicals that will expand her heart to it's limits and the
possible side effects include heart attack and death, even if those dont occur,
it's just like stretching a rubber band almost to the breaking point, it weakens
the muscle so that the next time it could be more serious. she refused the test.
the second stepped on a treadmill for 15 minutes, also no heart attack, the
third was my boss, he's an older fellow at 73 but in pretty good shape, again
testing came back negative but for some reason a triple by-pass was done.

I have medical insurance, I have to be covered or they wont cover my kids, the
whole profession in the US is about getting more money and pushing more drugs,
my ex-wife takes the kids to the doctor every few weeks, the doctor has had them
on athsma meds and neither of them show any symptoms of being athsmatic, the
meds make the kids sleepy... I wonder why it was prescribed?
