it sounds like your make.conf file is corrupt. I had this problem with a 2004.2 iso i downloaded.

rm /etc/make.conf
cp /etc/make.conf.example /etc/make.conf

edit it to your needs, but im guessing you already did that

Do what Suffer said. I have noticed that Mirrorselect does the same thing to my make.conf The way I got around it was create a new /etc/make.conf, but Suffer's method is easier.

Perhaps this guide will help you: http://unix.za.net/~fdsd/Brief%20Gentoo%20Installation%20Guide.htm

I wrote it a few years ago.

thanks for all the help everyone
much good karma for you guys

i have a new question now though.
I got through the installation and when i reboot the system,
right after the grub screen i get an error that looks like this

(hd0,0)
kernal /kernel-2.4.26-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/hda
Error 15: file not found

does this meant that grub can't find the kernel or initrd?

grub is set to load the boot partition
I used genkernel and wrote up my grub.conf just like the handbook said.

i'm lost, linux is like a giant puzzle
its alot of fun when the pieces go together and frustrating as all hell when they don't

thanks again everyone
you guys are what makes the shroomery such a geat place
i'll pass out them 5 shrooms when i get a browser that will let me

Code:

default 0
timeout 5
title=Gentoo Linux 2.4.26-r9
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.4.26-gentoo-r9 root=/dev/ram0 real_root=/dev/hda3 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 vga=794
initrd /initrd-2.4.26-gentoo-r9

Thats basicly what my grub.conf looks like. Oh, but looking at it again (after another bongload) i think you just forgot to put the partition number. you have "real_root=/dev/hda" and im pretty sure it should be "real_root=/dev/hda3" or whatever you set it up as during insntall.

use the boot disk to chroot in and change the file.

well the only thing i can recomend is paste EXACTLY what you have in your grub.conf and lets see. maybe you installed the os on a different partition... i really dunno. Blah, keep messing with it dude, its bound to be a typo or something. Whats the error message it gives you now?

What does your partition table look like?

I just looked at what you posted:

/kernal /kernel-2.4.26-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/hda

You spelled "kernel" wrong. If that's exactly how you have it in your grub.conf, there's your problem

PS. If I were you, I would have gone for the gentoo-dev sources, they're at 2.6.8, no need to still be using the 2.4.x kernel at this point. Once you've got everything up and running, you might want to try upgrading. Configuring some things is quite a bit easier with the new kernels.

i fixed the problem, it was -r9, not -r6. I feel extra stupid. Now when I reboot the system i get this error when it tries to load the kernel error2: bad file or directory type is /boot/kernel the actual kernel or is it just a directory? When i do this /# cd /boot/kernel-2.4.26-gentoo-r9 and then list the contents of that directory it is blank. and i do have it mounted. Is there suposed to be something in here? thanks again

/boot/kernel-2.4.26-gentoo-r9

I think that should be the actual kernel, and not a directory... try changing your kernel to that in the grub.conf.
