I think I fucked up my GRUB... again.
    #5542532 - 04/21/06 10:31 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Hey everyone.

Well, just when I thought I was getting marginally computer savvy, I totally screwed mine up. I've had a dual boot system for a little while now, with a XP partition followed by a Linux partition. I decided I wanted to try out the new ubuntu (with all the compiz stuff, who wouldn't?). I tried upgrading, but ran into major problems, so I decided to go ahead and reinstall from disk. I just followed the ubuntu install normally, choosing to reformat the same ext3 partition and setting the mount point as [/]. Selected 'yes' when it asked if I wanted to install GRUB and I assumed everything was going to plan, as I was following the same procedure as my last good install. I reboot and get the familiar GRUB menu at start up, but when I select ubuntu, I get:

Quote:

Booting 'Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.12-9-386
root (hd1,1)
Error22: No such partition

And when I select XP:

Quote:

Booting 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional'
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

NTLDR is missing

So I obviously did something wrong, though I have no idea what. And, unfortunately, I'm not really sure what to do. At the moment, I want nothing more than to reset everything so that I automatically boot to my Windows partition. And I can worry about installing ubuntu some other day. If anyone has any ideas, please give me a reply. Tried googling, but got very specific instructions that didn't quite apply to my situation.

Thanks in advance.

PS: I'm in Windows right now by way of booting with the install disk in.

Try changing this line:
root (hd0,0)

For instance:
root (hd0,1)
or
root (hd0,2)

Assuming your using one hard drive.

You may post or search in the Ubuntu forums too, they are really helpful and perhaps more knowledgable on this issue.

:goodluck:

Default GNOME - HOWTO: Restore GRUB (if your MBR is messed up)
Written by vnbuddy2002

Restore GRUB quite simple in Ubuntu, instead going through all the "gain root access" and play with shell commands, you can use the Ubuntu installation CD to restore it without going through all kinds of hassles.

Here are the steps:

1. Boot your computer up with Ubunto CD
2. Go through all the process until you reech "[!!!] Disk Partition"
3. Select Manual Partition
4. Mount your appropriate linux partions

/
/boot
swap
.....

5. DO NOT FORMAT THEM.
6. Finish the manual partition
7. Say "Yes" when it asks you to save the changes
8. It will give you errors saying that "the system couldn't install ....." after that
9. Ignore them, keep select "continue" until you get back to the Ubuntu installation menu
10. Jump to "Install Grub ...."
11. Once it is finished, just restart your computer

Good luck!.

perhaps?

Well... thanks for the replies, guys... The problem seems to have fixed itself. Right after my post, my BIOS stopped recognizing my master hard drive, which made me freak out even worse. And then I unplugged the drive and plugged it back in. Then I rebooted. And GRUB worked as normal. Weird. I'm in kubuntu now.

*Crossing fingers and hoping I don't have to go through that again.

That's great news!

I hope you enjoy using Kubuntu, it's a really nice linux flavor. Next time try Xubuntu, it's really sleek and my personal favorite!
