Magic happens. Its a matter of attribution whether you practice the magic or whether you are auxiliary in the process.

In my understanding Divinty lets your spiritual acts fall into place with a Magical occurrance.

Your acts are not causative, they accompany the Divine Magic. You are allowed to align with it though.

Divinity dislikes "wizards" who accredit the miraculous to themselves. Divinity favors miracle workers who humbly place credit where it is due.

No spells, harmony.

For me, to believe in 'magic' is to put myself in a certain position. One that more endurance than abundance.
Quietening of static and being allowed with the imagination of nature.
So then, practise comes moment to moment, just as the reasons I practise for.

Perhaps we are casting spells constantly, all the time, through the very vibratory nature of our being (constantly emanating ripples through space-time). Without thinking...

Our own Nature!

I like to go out in nature with my spirit buddies and marvel at the unending unfolding, spider webs are being woven constantly! Running water is good, because of the unending flow. Mountain streams ftw

Out here in the Adirondacks the loons teach me magic. They have this uncanny way of piercing trance states with that haunting call they do, aa-ooooo

Listening to the new Boards of Canada album, one of their tracks has vocals referencing "Thelema" - I'm not very familiar with Aleister Crowley's work, but I like this wikipedia summation here:

Quote:
"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law":[42] Adherents of Thelema should seek out and follow their true path, known as their True Will.[43]

"Every man and every woman is a star":[44] This refers to the body of light,[45] which Plato described as being composed of the same substance as the stars.[46] It implies that individuals doing their Wills are like stars in the universe—occupying a time and position in space, yet distinctly individual and having an independent nature largely without undue conflict with other stars.[47]

"Love is the law, love under will":[48] The nature of the Law of Thelema is love, which Crowley wrote should be understood in the same sense as the Greek word agape. Both agape and thelema sum to 93 in Hermetic Qabalah.[49] The phrase "love under will" is often abbreviated as "93/93",[50] suggesting that "love under will" represents something akin to unity.[47]

One last thought... I'm reminded of going up into Metatron's Computer, and being shown a kind of Cosmic Way-Station where all thoughts from all beings/entities go, where all the thoughts of all beings are sorted, distributed, sent out to where they need to go to next. Every thought we have is a spell?

Wow, that’s really incredible.  For me, I like thinking about all the different possible states of mind out there and how they all show us a world beyond the ordinary one. There are states of mind beyond time and space, for instance.

In this way, I agree with Lithop that magic is not doing. Magic is BEING: a feeling like “you are”, letting reality and the universe be its thing. Like, Asante says, place respect in the universe itself.

But then I also think it’s neat the worlds we create, like dreams, waking life, and visions… how they are all valid ways of processing reality, showing other facets to a possibly endlessly cut diamond.

Who knows how many states of mind there are and what can be known behind the waking eye?

It’s a good thing to be alive and exist in any state of mind. The universe feels innately psychedelic, mystical, and deploy magical to me. Every day somehow gets me deeper and deeper. I like what Blue said and can connect it to some of what is learned in NDEs, where our mind is all one with existence.

@Solar I also enjoy thinking about that stuff, and agree about its neatness.
:acidfire:

@Blue  far be it from me to avoid the 'every thought a spell/ corporate sigil THEY LIVE' type projections we can use when reckoning with this stuff. It's all good conceptually.
Rather hoped instead, to keep the idea of spells and mantra as seperate ideas in the thread. Because I don't see the specific results driven idea of a spell or incantation as being quite the same as chanting of a mantra.

And IMO Boards of Canada are much better contributors to the world, than Crowley.

@Lithop, yes spells are different from mantra. I was connecting them overly simplistically by both being connected to the spirit world.

I personally have struggled with mantras and have difficulty getting anything from the Buddhist style of meditating and all. I never got how someone can get something from just sitting, quieting the mind, and all that... and wondered if they're seeing anything or getting downloads. They probably are. It seems fruitful either way. For me, I like things to be ecstatic, more dramatic and intense. Maybe that's why I enjoy casting spells and struggle with mantra. I like to outright break the rules of reality and to see reality fall apart. I enjoy mind expansion.

@Solar, hey we all have different stuff appeals to us! Big part is finding something that sparks us up like this at all, and developing a relationship there. I can understand your preference toward the more energetic, ecstatic expressions.

One thing I'd like to note, is the idea of always getting something from practise- in this case visions, downloads etc. Sometimes what we need is to lose stuff whether that's habits, expectations, ideas, whatever chains we impose or find imposed on ourselves.

Mantra can be dynamic too though, just the other week I was coming up on mushrooms in nature on a long walk, and syncing a certain mantra to my pace was very immersive and eased me into the trip/environment lovely.

@Blue :lol:
Surely you can let him off with a warning?

The mantra and the spell are thought form. I don't see the difference more than would be with yantra, mudra... They are all prana. The ecstasy and drama may be called bhakti, lila, devotion and play, and then when you rest and it is quiet, that's meditative part. We already do it.

the difference between mantra awareness practice and spell casting is pretty much the clarified by expectation.
as solarshroomster said::
"how someone can get something from just sitting"

"I like to outright break the rules of reality"

These phrases are natural for a person who does not consider their own conditioned mind as the origin of impulses to
get something
have fruit
be free of conditioning

The mantra (combined with the breath) is valuable to enable awareness while distractions continue.
the echo of the last few syllables helps restore the activity of repetition of the mantra

in contrast spells are attempts to hack the universe which is very appealing superficially until you realize that by the time any genie grants the 3rd wish the lucky person usually feels stripped of everything they valued in the first place.

Reminds me of the Buddhist idea of the wish fulfilling jewel, and the value in experiencing all our desires and having our wishes fulfilled, so that we see through them (grow sick of them/by them) and no longer seek true fulfillment through them.

But the better path seems to be to be graced by an experience of unconditional love, and nurture that so that it can permeate our being

"spells are attempts to hack the universe which is very appealing superficially"

I was surprised looking at some old magic books in western esoterica - they read like teachings of enlightenment even reminding of Vasistha etc., and then may go into using the elements and so forth for purposes. Also mantra is used for anything a magic spell may be. The 'liberating' mantras we hear of more broadly have the transcendent, less specified intent, similarly as they are used for concentration, one-pointedness and absorption. But this is why I didn't so much distinguish them.

truly some esoteric artistry, spiritual artform

:magicfingers:

For my definitions: the idea of a spell is insular, mantra is wide open- a group effort.
So I disagree. (:edit: to clarify, what I disagree with is "Also mantra is used for anything a magic spell may be.")

I agree in principal with this, but not in practice, for me personally.

I have long felt that the human impulse is wrongly geared more towards "doing" than "being", to our own detriment. But "being" for me can also take in the "doing"... actually, it is the matrix in which all "doing" sits, in my experience.

So, in "being" one with reality, YOU get to play as well. Playing is part of creation.

I'm just not understanding this Buddhist tradition at all of sitting and stilling your mind if all of this is your mind. I don't get it. I'm told I'm not supposed to be achieving a special state or looking to achieve anything, so what the heck then is the point? If my mind exists, I want to point it to something interesting. Which is where mysticism has led me.

Apologies if this comes across harshly, that's not my intention. I am serious though about trying to understand what is the point of people when they are meditating or doing any kind of Buddhist meditative work if there's no "special state" to be achieved at all from it. Can someone please explain?

"Spellwork" can be defined as a special kind of "playing with reality". Essentially, using your mind to alter the rules. "Mantra" may reflect what is already there and basking in it, whereas "spellwork" recreates what's already there in a new form.

Making potions.

I've always been fascinated with the idea that there is someone out there, right now, who is utterly convinced they are casting spells. Not merely intellectually, but fully and utterly convinced. What would it be like to be in the mind of such a person? Is he really insane or just processing reality differently?

Ok
Admittedly you can't see the point of being aware of being in the moment moment to moment, which is not about instrumental activity.

It can seem to be far "easier" to be a server of instrumental personas, measuring achievements that have spiritual seeming value, rather than sitting with the mind flower wide open.

But if you drop spiritual materialism and Karma hacking and let the flower open on its own, it will make sense. Not competitively, but nothing is like it.

It does seem sometimes like Buddhists are too serious and have lost touch with childlike wonder and play. We have to poke and prod and tease them until they get angry and realize they’ve been too serious
