Fellow fruit heads: anyone notice a shortage on pomegranates and an abundance of other crops?
    #27275202 -

I like to monitor the waves of fruit and seasonal delights in the local grocer- and I've noticed that the fall 2020 and early 2021 Pomegranate season was REALLY WEAK!

There were tons and surplus of papayas- avocados- pineapples- apples- and some others- but the Pomegranates barely showed up at all.

Maybe it's because I wasn't shopping as much --as I hardly went to the store for over 6 months only only ordered grocery online.- But I remember GIANT bins full of hundreds of pounds of them for really cheap during the boom season.

Maybe I just missed the "big boom" that usually happens around late in the year. Did anyone notice the same? If so- I really missed out- You can get them during the surplus for like $50 cents for small ones! And like 3/$5 for really huge ones.

I'm also noticing that at this time there are way less strawberries than usual but I guess I can blame that one on the weather.

Thoughts? Concerns?

Nope.  Strawberries will be fine.  Pom's and all the work it takes to just some seeds to eat from that giant fruit is just not worth it.  Will drink the juice though.

Ahhh! You don't know the pom trick? It's a game changer dude.

You just cut the pom in half, take it outside- hold it in your hand over a bowl and wack it with a heavy wooden spoon real hard on the back as you rotate it- and all the seeds fall out.

I can de-seed an entire giant pom in probably 90 seconds or less.

Go watch a youtube video about it. Major awesome.

I planted pomegranite trees a couple of months back. We had a cyclone and they got stripped to sticks, they are coming back now though.

Can't wait to be eating my own pomegranite.

They can take many years to produce fruit- but can live as plants for up to 200+ years.

I also grow pomegranates- are you growing in containers or in ground- and do you know the shape of the mature plant if you don't prune it? I'm trying to grow mine as "lolipops" where you have one main stem maybe 3-4 feet high and THEN let it branch/bush out.

Left un cared for they grow these long drooping limbs like a giant shrub. And put out tons of sucker shoots near the base of the stem( which I leave and then use as hardwood cuttings over winter)

How old are your plants? Also what planting zone do you live in? I have a technique where I propagate dozens of new plants every year FOR FREE- but i'm in zone 7b. I also make tons of "new" fig trees this way.

My trees are still very young, maybe 1 1/2 ft tall, this is the first time I have put in pomegranite so I don't know anything about them yet. It was really just a whim that they ended up in the ground here. Was at my tree shop buying rooting powder and I saw 2 trees in 1 pot going for the same price as one tree, so bought them and planted them the same day.

I'm in zone 1 in Australia.

I've got acres of cleared land so I have been spending a lot of time just chucking things in semi-randomly as I come across them and figuring out later what to do with them if they survive.

It's nice to think the pomegranite could outlive me significantly.

Poms are generally imported into the U.S. Not only has trade slowed globally, there's big market for poms in the eastern Hemisphere and it seems to be getting hotter. Probably not worth it for the Chileans to schlep them to the U.S. if you get into the Eurasian market.

Ah wow- that must be nice to have land.

Yeah- here in zone 7a in America it does get below freezing and that is when you can use a technique called "hardwood cuttings"

"softwood cuttings" are much higher maintenance- higher fail rate- almost twice daily care or attention required- where as hardwood cuttings you literally cut a branch off in the winter and stick it in some good soil and just wait and it roots over the winter and by about mid summer you report it and BAM- free fruit trees.

Figs are wonderfully easy to propagate-

So zone one- that's almost like tropical then isn't it? temp wise at least! Does it ever freeze there?

I'd love to be able to grow tropical type plants outdoors.

What are the average highs in the summer and the average lows in the winter?

Yeah it's fully tropical here, rainforest outside. Never gets truly cold, I rarely wear shoes or a jacket. The humidity is not for the faint of heart though.

Hardwood cuttings sound great. The majority of my fruit trees are grafted, they have a stock that is more resilient to really wet periods. If I didn't get them many would simply drown during the summer. Avos, guava, mangoes and that sort of thing grow like troopers here straight from seed though, so I don't get too upset that pears, apples, stone fruit and the like are a no go. I'd pay serious money for a good peach though, fuck it's been over a decade since I had a great peach.

I had figs but they died, I think they drowned. :shrug2:

What sort of other trees have you got on the go?

That's awesome! I'd love to grow avos. and mango- But you should learn how to graft if you are not already- if you want to grow longterm from seed because you could end up with a tree with bad genes- grafting prevents this.

And yes- figs don't like to be over wet because their roots are so shallow.

Umm? I have this one plant called Gold Berry- and a couple blueberries- a peach tree- 3 apples- lots of figs... Oh yeah and RASPBERRIES- they are so dope man - and one blackberry  .

I'd go sort of crazy in a tropical zone with an avocado mango banana orchard.

And about the peaches- I am from the state of Georgia in the USA- and our State Symbol is the Peach- lol- there's thousands of peach orchards here and truckloads of them. There's nothing quite like biting into a juicy ripe peach- that's for sure.

I had bananas but a cyclone blew them over, gonna get some more in. Blue Javas are certainly on the menu.

Berries are rad. I've got a decent blueberry in a pot and a mulberry tree.

Tropical zone is pretty good for growing all sorts of entheogens as well. Jungle plants and trees are the shiz hey.

Peaches man, I'll eat them aaaall day long.

how is the natural soil there? pretty fertile or needs tons of work?

It's pretty fertile, rainforest and swamp. Some parts of my block are a little bit flattish but I just plant natives there and they really don't care. Shoot down tap roots and just charge on.

How's your soil?

Do you go with grasshoppers and other pests? I'm farming fucking grasshoppers here. Can't grow a vegetable, no way.

I just remembered, I do have a fig in a big pot that I was given maybe 6 months ago. It's charging along. Fucken hoppers were smashing it so I hosed it in tobacco spray. Gotta keep topping it up though  or they just eat all the leaves. Cunts.

That's a neat lifestyle. The soil here is hard rock and clay- but years of forest growth has built up the natural hummus but most of the places people dig are clear-cut either by man or the massive ocean that used to be here. - and there's patches of land where you can hit some rich soil for a few inches and then it's deeply mineralized clay and sedimentary/metamorphic lay lines.

I can't complain...

I'd say overall it's like being on the middle of a hill.

Sounds pretty cool Fiery, mixed soil is interesting. There's bugger all rocks in my area, you could dig a swimming pool with a shovel if you were inclined to. When I lived over west I had pea-granite soil that was very rich. Digging a hole for a pot plant was hard work over there.

Planted Hawaiian baby wood rose vines along one fence the other week, they love it here.

Are you on a hill? How's your place in terms of exposure?

Have noticed the fear of lack of ketchup tomato packs.:toiletduk:

It is considered a fruit and because of covid they can't have the pump ketchup.

in February 2020 a friend bought a pomelo, I had just started my fast for lent (1008 hours/42 days) and I mentioned to her why did you buy a pomelo? and she was like wtf I thought it was a grapefruit, and then refused to eat it

so I took it home and stuck it in my fridge, told my family to eat it, but nobody did

then in April 2020 my fast was coming to an end, and the pomelo was still there, I broke my fast in the morning with homemade chicken broth, and thats all I planned to eat for the day, but around 5pm I got hungry

I saw the pomelo in my fridge, and I thought, all the vegans break a fast with fruit instead of broth, I will eat the pomelo

that pomelo was the best thing I ever tasted, I thought im am going to buy them again when the store has them next year

then in 2021 (mayby January), the store had pomelos again, so I brought one, it was underwhelming, seemed almost unripe, I dont know if the 2020 pomelo ripened in my fridge while it sat there for over a month, or because it was the first solid food I ate in 42 days, but the taste of the pomelo just wasnt the same

Thought that was a Bay Leaf which goes quite well in a Tomato Soup but Kratom the Krackon of caffiene instead.  Should try some Kratom in it with a ham sandwich and lettuce and onion and tomato.

Stimulants.  Whew! Let it soak a bit of course and, a grilled cheese sandwich to dip it in.  Wonderful!
