What to look for where, in a maritime climate to boost the odds? (Nova Scotia)

Hi there. I am a newbie to Shroomery.org, and I have to express huge gratitude that this place exists. I have read all the general advice provided on this site, and explored descriptions in detail, because I don't want to waste anyone's time - if possible. Massive thanks to all of you experts who graciously share your wisdom and help us ignorants stay safe on the path.

So I moved to Nova Scotia 18 months ago and am enjoying my second Fall season here. I am in Mahone Bay, right next to the jumble of islands and peninsulas that seperate us from the open ocean. It's a cool, damp maritime climate, with plenty of sunny days throughout the year. Also pretty sparsely populated so I hardly ever meet a soul on my walkabouts. It's nice to have the woods almost to myself - thanks ticks!

I have access to various landscapes and I was hoping for some advice on what species (or genus at least) to look for where, and how to divide up my precious hunting time for best chances of success.

1. Forests (mostly conifers, with hardwoods mixed in) -  thanks to rockiness of ground causing shallow roots, plus lots of rain, there are many trees blown down by the wind. Also loads of moss which can be DEEP and very bouncy to walk on. It's such fun!

2. Farms & pastures - mostly horses & dairy cattle, but I also know where some pigs are kept.


3. Manicured gardens in town. These are full of perennial shrubs and ornamental conifers, usually surrounded by deep wood chips, mostly cedar but very mixed dyed red, black or brown. This may have to be a night-time mission - time to get my head-torch out!

4. Graveyeards.

It's been raining a lot recently and the weather is perfect for foraging. What should I be looking for in each of my 3 zones please, and where would YOU choose to spend the most time to maximise the odds of coming up smiling?

Yes you are right! I have found at least 5 types of bolete, and tried eating 2 so far. They tend to be a bit water-logged, and unappetising, but at least they are simple enough to ID. I even see them around town under conifers in flower beds.

You can definitely find psilocybe semilanceata (liberty caps) in NS. You'll find them in farms and pastures (but may find them in any manicured or non-manicured grass... they grow in my parents' back yard and graveyards/soccer fields around here are known to be good for hunting).

Be a little careful with boletes... I would assume that the NS boletes are similar to the NL ones, and my NL guidebook says "All boletes with red or orange pore surfaces should be considered toxic." In terms of edibility, boletus edulis tops the list (by a long shot, I'd say).

Might find the weeping widow in a graveyard.
You're close to my area somewhat
Turkey tail and armilarrias in the woods maybe some pholiotas, oysters, puffballs, deer mushrooms, ganodermas, enoki, hen of the woods, blewits, chants. Many of the ones I listed last are supposed to be in my area and i haven't found them.
King stropharias in the garden woodchipped areas are possible maybe, and shaggy mane in many areas, I find them from in a trail in the woods to side of the road grass.

I'm not sure if you were asking for an ID on that photo, but it's a Leccinum species - edible but poor in my opinion.
