I could care less about myself, my worry lies with the environment and this wonderful planet we are stripping of its resources and polluting/ poisoning.

"perfectly safe" Yeah right zappa, synthetic fertilizers, growth hormones, pesticides, they all have negative effects, even if you don't want to admit it...

what are the overreaching implications to the planet? i mean, like, long term? it sounds like you're saying that there is no coming back from this, which i tend to find almost silly, when people put it that way... nature can come back from alots of shit.

if we need to do this stuff to feed people (which, you've seen the results of not feeding people, right? it's pretty terrible, and the only thing those hungry people can do is either die, or have babies... which is worse?)

quite frankly. the whole situation is a shit show. i don't care who wins. i guess i am in this case just being a useful idiot. i mean... i really don't care. the world supports some of the most fantastically abhorrent shit that has ever existed. maybe i shouldn't care that we destroy it, and eventually ourselves.

because the only other option is... kill ourselves, and let the world breath a sigh of relief. but then we have to go through the tedium of that, as well.

i just can't care enough about these things, they are too fucked up and inherent in our human species to really go up against in a way... the way i see it. we have too many people, so there is no way around it.

They all also have incredibly beneficial effects.  Like vastly increasing crop yields

Got anything to back that up with? No, of course not, you heard someone say it and decided to believe it. Next you will toss out a link claiming it backs your assertion when it doesn't. We know your tricks, you never change.

It takes more than a lolsy to back up your claim. Have you given up already? We are talking about gmo's, in case your alzheimers is acting up again. As usual, you have nothing.

Actually, you were responding to me, take a look. Your alzheimers is getting bad, isn't it?

Now I suppose the script calls for some insults and then you "forget" to back up your dumb claim and walk away.

How long do livestock really live?  They aren't a good indicator.  I don't think GMOs cause any harm by default, but not because of looking at livestock.  If GMOs were going to cause any serious long term issues evolution never would have progressed life for this long.  GMOs are just speeding the selective breeding process up.

The only one I would argue increases yield are the hormones, but at what cost? Toxic byproducts in the food and earth? What is the point then...

Not to mention with good plant genetics and polycultural gardening none of that stuff is necessary.

And Akira, I never said it was too late. Though who really knows, there already is such an insane increase of carcinogens there is no going back really.

Though if we stop entirely now I am sure nature would remedy our pollution. At the same time if we don't get it in check shit will probably hit the fan soon.

Contrary to what people think we don't need GMO's or chemical farming methods to feed the worlds starving.

Maybe if we stop caring about cash crops we wouldn't have mass people starving in the first place.

The earth supports us, and balance. Humans are the ones doing all the fucked up stuff, and ruining the balance.

Fapjack, that is BS.

100 years ago most GMO's could not have existed. Why? Because most pesticides used did not exist yet to splice their genetics into anything.

GMO's also allow people to combine genetics that would have never come together in nature, it is a huge step up from natural selection and selective breeding...

They reduce effort required for the crop. Fertilizers increase yield clearly, but there is no need for synthetic ones.

Pesticides and herbicides may increase yield in indirect ways, but once again their are natural alternatives that wont bleed into the environment.

Generally I would argue they just make the farming process take less effort. One could get more food by poly cultural gardening per acre it would just take much more effort.

setb, I was just pointing out that as most of these products are new and have not been around very long, they couldn't possibly naturally end up in plant genetics.

Which is a big part of what makes GMO's so different from natural breeding, the whole process is unnatural.

Sure you could modify something in as close to a natural way as you could, but even then it could still cause unexpected changes.

no, i mean I THINK it's too late. i admire your tenacity but... i mean, look the world... entirely... wants a: more cars b: quickly begotten substance from the sky to just fall into laps and c: to continue to grow across this planet like a plague. more pollution, more more!

you can't fight the entire planet, man. but like i said, i admire your tenacity. if it was up to me, entirely... i'd be sending alot of people to the moon. because that's the only way i can see to change things. getting rid of people, and making more room temporarily for less idiocy, which will of course grow out again, from the general population. which i'd need, of course, to supply me with a regular normal human life, as opposed to generally being on the fringe of extinction with a very lacklustre, and more painful life. a more alone life.

generally speaking, life sucks. people suck. the Earth probably sucks for supplying all this inevitable crap to us. i'm not a wisp of energy, who can admire the great universal memo; "hey, at least you're here". i'm a rotting piece of meat that is constantly being reminded that death actually might not be such a bad thing.

so yeah life ain't even all it's cracked up to be. so who cares? if the Earth gets more rotten, it's only natural. if it gets better, for our sake, again, natural; and if we're wiped out, natural. so any outcome is fine with me, and i'm not going to worry about it, especially since i'd have to be able to literally mind-swipe people ala Men in Black and  just send them wheeling off a cliff, en masse, in order for anything to change. i'd have to do some horrible shit. which sucks... and i don't wanna contribute. so here things remain.

How is preventing a crop from being consumed by another organism increasing yield in an indirect way?  That seems pretty direct to me.  GMOs increase yield in many ways, if it wasn't for GMOs and synthetic fertilizers many more people would be starving to death.  The whole anti-GMO movement is such bullshit.  Every living organism is a chemical factory, genetically modifying organisms is just changing their processes.  It should be clearly labeled, but GMOs are extremely important to human survival.

There are plenty of positive movements gaining ground across the world, I feel hopeless too at times but their is always hope.

The attitude of the hopeless is dooming this planet just as much as the greedy bastards taking advantage of them.

I honestly wouldn't mind a fresh start myself, it is very possible too. If we don't kill ourselves the universe probably will before allowing us to spread.

There are plenty of ways we could all be wiped out at any moment, but that is what makes this sort of life so special, and why we need to work towards a bright future.

I am not apposed to GMO's as a whole, it is the fact that most are produces by bias greedy corporations such as Monsanto.

Once again though, we could be feeding everyone without GMOs, if people just gave up cash crops, so much land could be used for polycultural farming.

As apposed to producing goods to ship around the world, wasting more resources and helping the rich get richer.

Should Monsanto not be allowed to manufacture and sell a product its customers find economically useful just because they make some money?  Maybe you should reconsider your purchase of a cell phone and computer since those companies are making a lot more money than Monsanto.  And then there is the entire entertainment industry which is for the most part frivolous bullshit but also generates far more income than Monsanto.
