parking lot/ campin scene @ shows
    #1539845 - 05/11/03 08:28 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

My first jam band show was seeing the other ones back in 98 @ the Lakewood Ampitheatre, an interesting venue settled deeply in the south

I camped out @ the Stone Mountain park campground

when i came upon the lot, people, people everywhere quiet a variety...some cats had set up some tables and were djing, others selling sanwhiches, burritos, ganja balls, stir fry, cold beer, etc

i encountered tents buses...literally a community, city built within a matter of hours
after the show the hub-bub grew to a glowing intensity, everyone feeding of the energy of the music, smiles everywhere, people chatting, giggling, glowing
fireworks ignited the sky

we returned to the campground, took a dip in the warm lake that surrounded the stone mountain was quite a different after gobbling a handful of shooms i captured in the lot earlier
afterwards engaged in a few drum circles, explored the campground further

tell your story

I lived 8 years of my life in the parking lot at Dead shows.  The first few years we lived out of a van and camped at most shows. Then I traded and moved on to staying at hotels for the sake of comfort.
The lot is an intense place after a show. All that energy pouring out of the show and everybody's in party mode. Plus thats were you make your living.

Best lots- Red Rocks, Shoreline,Frost
Worst lots-St. Louis,Charlotte

Yeah, I'm a big fan of shows you can camp at. There's a music festival in the Sierras I've been going to for about nine years now. It's held in a huge camping ground/park. The people and the atmosphere of the community is almost more enjoyable that the music itself. Just like twistedweather said, it's a temporary city. Except everybody's there to have a good time. The sounds that echo through the trees are truly magical. It's always a mixture of laughter and people jaming.

They are getting bad in some scenes but I will focus on the good here. What do I think of when I remember the great scenes?

First that smell, the mix of dank, patcholi, nag champa and body odor, unforgetable. That constant rythm of drums and people happily chatting about events past and to come ever so often hearing that vender girl screaming "super heady veggie burritos!!!" Lots of venders, some out to get rich some out to gather up enough change to get to the next show, selling pipes, crystals, rocks, food, beer, drugs, water, and just about anything that people will buy. Constanly having people walk by you offering every drug under the sun by softly whispering it in your ear, others just flaunt there stuff and beller it out. Personally, I like to toss my frisbee around while all this goes on around me.

Thats a good example of a stroll down shakedown Adom. I love the look of the people that are there for there first time. It's like the circus has came to town, but it's a freak circus. That look of joy and astonishment as they realize that there was this whole other world and way of life.

I also got to witness a very negative change in the lot scene at Dead shows.
In the mid eighties when I came on it was so different. It was more open, less people and a better overall vibe. In the late eighties and ninties the Dead got hugelly popular. They got more fans that came for the music ,but the also got a huge amount of people that came just for the party. They knew they could get good drugs and party and didn't give a shit about scene. These people changed it alot. Then when the DEA started operation Dead End it got real dark. People started going to prison and alot of the older family retired.
I'll never forget Deer Creek in 95. Standing at the top of the hill and watching a mass of drunk people tear the 15 ft. wood fence down and charge into the show.
You could feel the music change as the band watched in horror. You could feel their sorrow. It became obvious that it couldn't go on. Jerry played his last show ever at the end of that tour. :frown:

Great words, I remember when i first had "the look" pasted on my face it was probably the best moment in my life so far. I was shrooming when I first encountered this beautifull world and realized what was going on. Man, that makes for a joyfull trip! Joy and astonishment are exactley what i felt. I've been addicted ever since.
