I've never been able to get a crown to grow roots.

Any one ever had luck just using seeds?

I got a great tasting pineapple the other day that had a bunch of seeds,  saved a few.

Some people tell me to cut the top of the pineapple, leaving a little meat, and plant that. I think that would attract bugs and kill the pineapple. What I do is grab the leaves on top and twist and pull so that whole section comes right out of the fruit. Then pull off some of the leaves on the bottom until you have some of the little brown roots showing. Put that in a cup of spring water so the roots are submerged. For about a week, then plant in soil.

I get about 85% success with this method. I think some of the pineapples I buy are just beat up a little too much to grow.

I did this last fall, rooted it in water then planted.  Grew it out under a light over winter.  Put it out in the spring, it was doing great, until a late frost hit and I forgot to bring it in :thumbdown:.  I need to try this again, they're kind of pretty as house plants.

I was visiting the Papaya Tree Nursery last week with m'lady and saw this beautiful flowering pineapple. 

                   


The owner told me that it will still be another couple of months before he harvests this thing to eat, more of an ornamental than anything else, when grown within the constraints of a standard home.  We're putting our money on some higher yielders, picked up an extra large variety of loquat tree, a Pakistani mulberry tree, a caper berry bush, and heading back for a fresh graft of one of their cherimoya varieties, a super sweet variety of dragon fruit and possibly a star fruit (if we can make room for it).

Eating be damned, that's one pretty pineapple.  I assume it can be propagated but cutting and rooting the crown like other pineapples?
Edit:  Do you know what cultivar that pineapple is?

I do not, off the top of my head.  But I will try to remember to ask when I return for the cherimoya and dragonfruit in a week or two.
