why not do math?

also, i'm still of the firm opinion that one should be required to take a mathematical notations course BEFORE ever being exposed to an actual mathematics course. i'm not so good at mathspeak even though i'm relatively competent with calculations and evaluations.

I completely agree. I think the math notation should be recognized for what it is, notation, and the underlying concept should be understood.  I was only exposed to "calculate this integral", "factor this polynomial" for most of my life--being able to understand what makes a function actually integrable was much more interesting to me.

Satira and Waffle--

I hope this isn't a take home test.  This is how I would solve these problems.  I am just kind of guessing though.  I am not really an expert.

I'll start with Waffle's question--this one is easy!  1+1=2.

Next, Satira's questions.

1.

I'll prove this with Riemann integral, because it is just about the weakest integral.  If it is Riemann integrable it is integrable in just about any other way.  I think.  I never really studied integration.

Let's call the continuous function f.

Continuous function on compact set is uniformly continuous (I don't know if this is the official term--I just made it up).  That is, given epsilon>0, I can find delta>0 so that for any x and y with |y-x|<delta implies |f(y)-f(x)|<epsilon.  This is so because given epsilon>0, for each point, there is an epsilon that works in a neighborhood of that point.  This is an open cover.  Compactness gives me a finite subcover.  Take delta to be the minimum of these finite number of deltas.

The image of f is compact, thus bounded.  This is so because given an open cover of the range, the pullback is an open cover of the domain.  Compactness gives me a finite subcover.  Image of this finite subcover is a finite subcover of the range.

Let b be a bound of the size of the domain of f.

To show f is Riemann integrable, according to Wikipedia's definition of Riemann integrability, I have to show the Riemann sums converge.  To show this, I can show that the Riemann sums are Cauchy (because R is complete)--that is, given epsilon>0, these exists delta>0 so that for any two partition finer than delta, the Riemann sums differ by at most epsilon.  Pick delta so that |y-x|<delta implies |f(y)-f(x)|*b<epsilon by uniform continuity.  Then given any two partitions finer than delta, the Riemann sums differ by at most epsilon.  QED.

2.

Notice that the statement "I-AB is invertable if and only if I-BA is inverable" is logically equivalent to "I-AB is not invertable if and only of I-BA is not invertable".  If I-AB is not invertable, then there is a vector x!=0, with (I-AB)x=0.  That is, ABx=x.  Let y=Bx.  Notice that y!=0 because Ay=ABx=x!=0.  Then BAy=BABx=Bx=y.  Thus (I-BA)y=0 and y!=0.  Thus I-BA is not inverable.  QED.

By the way, don't Shiitakes taste great?

i think it's part of what makes mathematics a difficult subject for a lot of people. math notation is a bitch and a half, especially at higher levels. half the time i find myself thinking, WTF?

in addition to a math notation course being required, i think a fractions course would also be highly beneficial. i tutor basic algebra and run into so much anxiety from students when fractions are thrown in the mix. it makes me sad.

Thanks for the reply, I also had to justify a step more carefully regarding proving uniform continuity..calling set S the points in the domain used to define the finite subcover, choosing delta to be the min of the deltas that satisfy continuity definition for each point in S, doesn't necessarily prove that for a z not in S, there exists a y in S such that the min delta ball about z is contained in the min delta ball about y. I think I need a slightly different way of choosing the delta other than just min

All the other steps look correct though, thanks, I should try to think of an extension to this question..

Need to study the second question answer carefully now.

What's your math background by the way?

Yeah the notation is novel and complex in math, a very precise language indeed.

Which kind of math subjects do you enjoy?

I am sorry if I wasn't clear.  I tried my best, but I am not very good at explaining things.  The only thing I can think of that I didn't explain is that a n by n matrix M is non-invertible if and only if there exists a matrix x!=0 with Mx=0.  <= is obvious.  For =>, you can use Gaussian Elimination to invert the matrix.  The only way Gaussian Elimination fails is if it gives you such an x.  Or just use the rank of M, but then you need some linear algebra.

I studied a bit of math in school.  But actually, I am more interested in mushrooms than math.

That's easy.  Math is hard.  Mushroom hunting is easy.  I like easy things more than hard things.  Now eating mushrooms is anything but easy.  But somehow I like eating them anyway.  I guess I am inconsistent.

I haven't been able to understand the error in my uniform continuity argument.  But if you have a different way of proving it, then I won't worry about it.

all math subjects i've attempted i've enjoyed. i just finished my first semester of calculus and i quite enjoyed it despite quite a lot of crying during. taking the second course in the fall and looking forward to many more years of immersing myself in the language that is mathematics.

I'm entertained that you posted this in the pub. Your bullshit detector is going to wear out.

I'm not very familiar with combinatorics or graph theory, so I can't be much help. You're probably better off on a math forum with this stuff. Might be a few people who know something about it here, but...

So I've been staring at the tex button in the posting window for a few months, and I've been wondering if anybody has ever used latex on this site. I never bothered to learn it, but the formatting it provides for equations and such could be really useful in this thread.

After a few math classes you learn to stop crying, eh... mostly. You conserve your tears at least. The WTF thoughts are reoccurring though. The notation is a real bitch at first because it's necessarily strict. Same thing with the vocabulary, the methodology, and the assumptions. The strictness confines the ideas, so that they can be developed through deduction without being ambiguous enough to create inconsistencies, but it still allows enough ambiguity to make the ideas useful anywhere that the strict confines are satisfied. In math a contradiction means something is falsely assumed to be true. That's powerful, since the world seems to have lots of contradictions, and it kicks ass when those contradictions can be resolved with a little bit of mathy thinking and modeling.

I don't know what to do about students not having basic math skills when they get to college. It sucks for everybody. Fractions are covered several time in middle school and high school, as is some basic math notation. It just doesn't seem to be effectively learned in many cases. There are lots of problems with the way math is taught in schools, which is why people hate math. They associate it with frustrating bullshit:doublefu:.

I was a physics tutor for a while, and that involved lots of math tutoring. The best way I found to deal with poor math skills was to crush math fear, which involved being emotionally supportive and playful while aggressively teasing out misunderstandings and lacking skills. I'd usually start every tutoring session by letting the students vent their frustrations and dish on their professors, and I'd agree that bullshit was bullshit. It's important to be reasonable when doing math. After unnecessary frustrations were diminished, we'd start to explore the math more seriously and figure out what was confusing and how to approach problems differently to clarify that confusion and get rid of it. It's fun when they get to that "ooooooh!" or "aha!" expression, and it's bigtime smiles and love after that.

On another topic, I'm tempted to ask a question about how fourier transforms relate the time domain to the frequency domain, but the question isn't well formulated enough yet to justify asking it, so I'll go read about it instead. Thanks for the motivation OP. I was bitter about it before.

I'm taking a computer science course now on set theory and logic etc. where all the assignments use LaTeX. Seems like a handy thing to work with. I'm not really clear on how regular TeX is different though and I can't get anything to show up using that feature here.

Cool... here's a sample from a thread Ythan made about it 6 years ago, so it seems to work somehow.

Formula: 0

It looks all kinds of sexy.

I have had trouble getting the tex feature working. for example:
Formula: 0
should read ei pi = -1

But it clearly doesn't.

It used to work quite well, so I don't know what happened.
