Need advice on 4x4 trucks
    #11551724 -

Hey all,

After my amazing camping trip this past weekend, I realized that I can't have any real fun unless I have a vehicle that can navigate the woods.  I'm looking to purchase a 4x4 pick-up or SUV and was wondering if anyone can give me any recommendations?  Any advice on what to check for when purchasing a 4x4 would help.  I don't have a preference over make/model and I have about $3500 to work with.

Thanks,

kanglow

I assume you don't need a big truck, but rather just something to drive a little into the woods right?

Personally, I got a thing for Ford Rangers.  Tough little truck that is actually capable of driving off road and really cheap.  Keep up with the maintenance, and it will be reliable.  Here is one with high miles on ebay as an example:

Do NOT get an explorer, those are complete junk.  Toyota Tacomas are great too, buy may cost a little more.  Jeep Cherokees can be had on the cheap as well.  Just remember at that price point, you may need to fix a few things, so be ready for it.

At most I need something capable of carrying around my work equipment (cameras, lights, tripods, a jib, weights, etc) I have to bring about 450lbs worth of equipment when I work, which is only part time since I am in school.

I figure since I have about $3500 to spend, I want to try to find something for maybe $2700 or less that way I can fix up what it may need and make sure I have good tires on it.  I found a 97 4x4 blazer on Craigslist for only $1600 and they said it runs good, but it has high miles on it.  Do you know of anyone that has owned a blazer and if they ever had major issues with it?

the best 4wd you'll get in that price range is a toyota 4runner, something
in the late 80s, they're pretty indestructible, parts are common and you
dont have the big issues you will with most domestics, the transmission or
transfer case going out

both very costly fixes

Holy crap!

Your truck is BADASS!

How much can the wich pull?  Can you use it if you get stuck or does it only work for other people?

Hope that made sense...  I just smoked

Sweet, where we go camping is a lot of off-road, backwoods driving.  The place we went camping was about 20 miles into the woods in Ocala National Forest, FL.  No mountains or rugged terrain to speak of other than numerous trails over sugar sand dunes.  The place we want to go camping next requires 4x4 and neither my roommate nor I are capable of traversing such terrain...  he only has a 98 4dr Saturn that barely made it out to the 2WD accessible areas.

I'd really love to get my hands on a lifted truck that has a snorkel on it because there are a lot of spots on the river that we would love to camp, but the water is too high for a standard truck to get through.  Would making a water worthy 4x4 be expensive?  I'm only look at crossing at most 2'-3' of water...  and that would probably be in the most extreme conditions.  I definitely don't need that, it's just a want, more than a need.

Aren't the Ranger and Explorer built on the same platform?

Same thing happened to me when I played Neil Armstrong in Moonshot. They found me in an alley in Burbank trying to re-enter the earth's atmosphere in an old refrigerator box.
