New Head of Republican National Committee wants to "rebrand" the party
    #9708310 -

Steele wins Republican chair vote
source: BBC Americas
Michael Steele has won the election to be chairman of the Republican National Committee, becoming the first African-American to lead the party.

Mr Steele won in the sixth ballot, with 91 votes out of a possible 168. His nearest rival, Katon Dawson, received the remaining 77 votes.

Correspondents say Mr Steele was the most moderate of the five candidates who stood for the position.

The favourite, incumbent chairman Mike Duncan, pulled out after two rounds.

"We're going to say to friend and foe alike, we want you to be a part of us, we want you to with be with us, and for those who wish to obstruct, get ready to get knocked over," said Mr Steele in his acceptance speech.

Rebranding

He rose to prominence in 2006 when he stood for a senate seat in Maryland. He had previously served as the state's Lieutenant Governor.

After his senate defeat, he served as the chairman of GOPAC, a conservative political action committee.

As chairman of the Republican National Committee, Mr Steele will be in charge of overseeing the party's campaigning efforts nationwide.

He fought for the position on a platform of rebranding the party and finding ways to use new technology to connect with the conservative grassroots.

Mr Duncan had been the favourite to win the election, but dropped out after receiving fewer votes than expected in the first two rounds of voting.

He says he wants to "rebrand" the republican party. What do you think this means? Will this be a return to "real" conservatism and a distancing from the Christian right, or simply remodeling the Republicans as technologically capable? It is interesting to note correspondents say he is the most moderate out of the picks...

If the GOP would just fucking forget the christian right we would be a lot better off. there is no reason at all for any government to even be debating whether or not a man can marry another man or a woman marry another woman. anyone who cares needs to get a life and perhaps worry about their own marriage seeing as how almost 50% of all marriages end in divorce.

Maybe stop fighting a losing battle against the harmless marijuana plant and spend the saved money on roads and schools? Perhaps tax cuts?

Conservatives need to position themselves as the party of freedom instead of the party of oppression. All of their issues seem to revolve around war or preventing people from making a free choice on their own. What happened to fighting for a smaller more limited role for government and a smaller budget? These are the conservative ideas that are really missing from main stream politics today. Bigger isn't always better and in the case of government bigger most often means much less freedom and a lot more waste.

The Christian Right has the Republican party by the balls.

They will never divorce themselves from that bunch of retards, although I agree they would be a much more viable party if they would.

The two parties in America are held by their lobbies and funders. The republicans won't embrace those rational values for the same reason the US supports Israel. Money. Nobody's handing out wads of cash (to the politicians) to make pot legal or allow gay people to marry. Until this changes the republicans will likely make these changes as minimalisticly as possible.

The same thing that happened to non-intrusive government and the idea that any social safety net should have a built in payback.

The same thing that happened to fiscal responsibility of any kind.

The same thing that happened to not being the world's cop.

In short, both parties are now the party of LBJ.  Scream and yell all you like, facts are facts:  There is no distinguishable difference between the "two" major parties.

And the American public wouldn't have it any other way.

I don't see Obama pushing for Gay marriage, now that you mention it.

I also don't see Nancy Pelosi pushing for legalized pot.

Now, what were you saying about republicans?

I only mentioned them because they were the topic of the thread not because I was speaking exclusively about them.

Okay.

Doesn't matter, though.  The two (haha) parties don't actually disagree on anything.

Wow, agree 100% man.  Right on.  Esp. the american public wouldn't have it any other way.  We've got a fucking democratically elected legislature, if people really wanted to stop this shit they only need to vote against the proponents.  But they talk and talk and reelect the same people while subscribing to false choice politics.

To madtown, what does the republican party do that suggests the christian right has them tied up?  I think its kinda not the way you suggest- more liek how the democrats preach to the hippies and then ignore them.

The christian crazies will vote for republican almost always (minus the small minority that will vote for religious cooke parties like the one ron paul likes) so why should they care about them?  They only need to do enough nonsense to get them riled up, and their ignorance of the law generally does that enough.  You ever read what those guys think when a lawsuit is filed over some unconstitutional shit?  Ignorance a plenty.

There are surely republicans who go the extra mile, but I don't really see it the way you state.  The republicans seem to like the base, but I don't really see how you could say the nutters got em tied up.

Remember this?  I sure hope its true.

Quote:
''National Christian leaders received hugs and smiles in person and then were dismissed behind their backs and described as 'ridiculous,' 'out of control,' and just plain 'goofy,' '' Mr. Kuo writes.
...

While many conservative Christians considered President Bush ''a brother in Christ,'' Mr. Kuo writes, ''for most of the rest of the White House staff, evangelical leaders were people to be tolerated, not people who were truly welcomed.''

The political affairs office headed by Karl Rove was especially ''eye-rolling,'' Mr. Kuo's book says. It says staff members in that office ''knew 'the nuts' were politically invaluable, but that was the extent of their usefulness.''

Without naming names, the book says staff members complained that politically involved Christians were ''annoying,'' ''tiresome'' or ''boorish.''

Most atheists, especially communists, are against marijuana legalization.  I don't want to see all of the Christians converting to Islam.  Then there would be only one party, the Islamic party.  You would then have a choice between being a muslim, a dhimmi or death.  If you were a dhimmi, you would be shit on so badly that you would either convert to Islam or commit suicide.  Alternatively, you could have the communist party in power.  I prefer the status quo, the Replubicrats.  At least I can complain about things without going to prison for complaining.

So long as you do your complaining in one of the properly marked "First Amendment Areas" graciously provided to you by the party of your choice, way the hell on the other end of the parking lot.
