Strange E-mail.

I have just received a strange email ... It basically tells me that an email that I sent (to someone I don't know) did not pass a virus check and was therefore quarantined. It is a message I personally did not send. Could this mean that my email account is being used maliciously?
Here is a copy of the message:
Quote:
Code:
Action Taken: An attempt to disinfect the attachment was unsuccessful, so the attachment was quarantined from the message and replaced with a text file informing the recipient of the action taken. The infected attachment has been placed in the designated quarantine folder. Please exercise extreme caution when handling the quarantined attachment
To: [email removed]
From: aje742@gmail.com
Sent: 1869211862,29723753
Subject: HELLO
Attachment Details:-
Attachment Name: message.zip File: message.zip Infected? Yes Repaired? No Virus Name: Generic Malware.a!zip
I removed the email address of the person a message was supposedly sent to. It is an email address I have never seen before, so chances are I don't know who it is.
What do you think about this?

You most likely have one of the many e-mail worms that spread via sending emails to everyone in your contact list.
You should IMMEDIATELY run a FULL virus-scan on your system (use the online one at www.pandasoftware.com if you do not have your own).
I would also recommend you send out an email to everyone in your email address book, informing them that you were infected with a virus and that they should run a virus-scan on their own computer in case the virus has spread from your system to theirs.

The two things that shock me the most are the fact that I use my web browser to access my gmail account. I don't use a mail client of any sorts. That and the fact that I am running slackware linux.

Ok it's definitely not a virus
Someone may have gotten into your gmail account, change your password.

I have received such notifications before when my email address was spoofed to send out spam. My email account was not compromised and I did not have a virus.

There's a fucking great article about spam in scientific america, came out a few months ago. Explains their tactics. And they can also spoof email addresses like bio said.
There's still a possibility that you have a worm though. At work people call in because we've locked their accounts, and it turns out that they're addresses are basically hosts that use them to launch thousands of spam/virii... so yeah, it's a possibility. Kind of rare these days but I'd still run some scans. I'm sure you have now though.
