A really good lawyer can rock a jury trial hard.  Appeals are different, though.  The audience is a bunch of jaded judges who know every lawyer trick.  In an appeal, you have to actually have a valid argument.

That's a different story.  If you've got $150k for your appeal, I'll tell you it's a long shot, but I think there's a chance...lets do it.

If you're asking me if some other dude has a chance, sorry bro....he's fucked.

Never met the dude, and I don't know much about him.  I suspect he's some athlete who murdered some fools.  That probably makes him below average in the morals department.

would you be saying that because you want that 150k or because you actually think that 150k can be put to use to help provide evidence in favor of the client?

That's not what an appeal is.  You don't provide evidence.

If someone comes to me wanting to appeal, and this happens several times a week, I am honest with them.  If they literally have missed the appeal boat, I tell them I can't help them.  If they have a shot, however slim, I tell them that I'll be glad to make a legal hail mary pass, but it will cost them $xxxxx to do it.

It's up to them to decide whether or not the chance is worth the money.

He won the second trial BTW so I think IMO he felt like well shit I won the second court verdict but I lost the first one (the most important). "What's the point".

how does 150k change things compared to 25k?  is it what you personally think is worth your time in this long-shot of a situation?  is there a typical amount of time an appeal case takes?

maybe the better question is, what is the least amount of money you would accept to take on an appeal case that you would consider a "hail-mary?"

I do a lot of $5,000 appeals.  They're pretty lucrative because the appeal is just reading a file and drafting two briefs, plus a 10-20 minute oral argument.  The majority of the time spent can be done at my leisure without cutting into my availability for other things.

Having said that, it all depends on the size of the file.  An appeal from a murder jury trial is going to be a lot of work.  That's going to take probably hundreds of hours to do.  Unless I'm doing it because I'm on a crusade, I'm going to get paid well for that.

My price structure is mostly based on how much I don't want to do a particular case.  If I want the case, I'll do it cheap.  If I think the guy's going to be a pain in my ass, I'll price myself out of the running by quoting a very high price.  Occasionally, one of these assholes will still say yes, and I'm stuck doing the work but at least being compensated well for it.

In the case of Hernandez, I'd ask for a lot.  Not only because it's a lot of work, but because he can afford it.  If I get $150k from him, I can do a lot more pro bono work and still make my mortgage.  I've had a few celebrity clients, and they have made it possible for me to spend a lot more time doing what I want to do instead of what I have to do.

that i can dig; however, for my own life, i don't agree with charging someone extra or a different rate for the same work, "just because they can afford it"

I would charge everyone $150k if I could.  Most people can't pay that, so I accommodate them.

dude supposedly barricaded himself in his cell so CO's couldnt recover him half-way through his suicide, cuz that could mean vegetable state, and hanged himself with fabric attached to his window

weird man

inmates can hang themselves in ways you would never think of

some how, some way he anchored unkown
fabric(sheets, clothing, underwear)to his cell "window" and hanged himself..

you dont need to dangle from the cieling to hang yourself.most people in prison who hang themselves have their feet/body part touching the floor or bunk

he was 27 like alot of famous OD'ers and suiciders die,i e kurt cobain, amy winehouse and such

just a trippy story

ive just always been interested in the final thoughts of someone who committed suicide but ive always imagined suicide in a prison cell to be the ultimate way to die self inflicted cuz its so hopeless

That's not always the case there's a big difference in jail and prison speaking from someone that has been there and done that most attempts to commit suicide accure in "jail" awaiting to be sentenced the feeling of not knowing what you're faith is situations that you can't control outside the jail family, gf, kids etc In jail  you're limited to a lot most everything is suicude proof but there are ways this one older guy apparently put shampoo on the floor and hung himself that way while I was there but there are so many factors that play here I haven't read much on it butt those cell doors would be almost impossible to rig so that the COs couldn't get in there designed to prevent that to be a issue there are so many things I could say that may have played a roll in his suicude idk but he was prob in 23hr locked down
