Um, that is ridiculous. There is also a high demand for minimum wage workers in the city too. There might not be many factories in the city, but there are restaurants and bookstores and shopping malls and what have you.

Perhaps.  Others would describe living in a location where you can afford the cost of living as "reasonable", even logical.

People do that. And you know what that causes? Where I live in Southern California, it causes shit tons of traffic. Because everybody drives 2 fucking hours away from the other end of the freeway, since nobody can afford to live by where they work.

Frankly, you don't even save that much money anyway. I might save $100, maybe $150 a month for a room-rent if I drive an hour away to a cheaper place. Of course, you end up not saving anything, once you factor in extra gas costs.

If anything, this only reveals the lack of job opportunity and growth in most small towns. Large cities have white-collar jobs and industries such as marketing or finance that won't be as useful or available in a small town. The fact that small towns only have factory jobs or minimum wage jobs available indicates to me a lack of opportunity.

Agreed, but I'm not convinced it implies lack of job opportunity for minimum wagers.  As you said, lots of minimum wage jobs are factory and industry-related.  These occupations aren't located in larger cities since floor space is at a premium.

This is related to my original assertion that if you make minimum wage, you shouldn't be living in a big city, to which someone replied they had to because they couldn't find minimum wage jobs elsewhere.

These factory jobs no longer exist and were not un-skilled minimum wage jobs they were the jobs people supported their family on an bought property with and they were in cites like Detroit and Cleveland which are pretty large cities.

The reason there are no minimum wage unskilled jobs is because the people who would had decent factory jobs are now working at McDonalds or walmart.  The only reason they are even considering raising the minimum wage now is because the now formerly middle class are now experiencing what it's like to live on $8 an hour.

It came from a nonprofit institute so it must have merit.

Go to their website to read all about how increasing minimum wage and enacting paid sick leave (in pretty much the only country where it doesn't exist yet) would destroy the jobs market(read: hinder corporate profits).

This article is total bs. Less than half of minimum wage earners are young people, who we're told deserve a low wage. As for the other 60%, well they're married so it's all good.

If you're an adult and you don't like your minimum wage job, just marry up!

that was my take on it.

anyone want to raise a child on 50,000? btw that is both spouses income.... have fun with that.

Having a child while on a minimum wage income is an extremely poor decision.

I would argue even if you're making the average US household income, having one child is financially irresponsible.

So did babies suddenly get more expensive or are jobs paying less?

I wouldn't disagree.  Having children has serious ramifications.  A lot of people shouldn't be having them.

Less than what?  It's common knowledge that many decent-paying unskilled jobs have been replaced by computers and robots over the course of the last 20 years.

Psh, show this to my manager looking for his fourth (that's right, fourth) job to support his wife and kids. The wife's outta work at the moment but even when she worked the dude held down three jobs, one full time two part. Still living check to check. It's bullshit the dude works hard day in and out, just cause someone choses not to go to college they should be punished like that?

Automation has been replacing jobs for a century, the caveat is that new jobs are created, and the skills necessary to do that job demand lucrative wages. But those new, skill-required fields are being flooded with qualified prospectees. What's the incentive to pay a competitive wage when there are thousands of applicants?

That's not been my experience at all.  Engineering / computer science positions are abundant and, as you say, the wages are lucrative.  No issue on that front.

The issue is that the unskilled labourers who were doing the robots jobs are still unskilled and cannot do the engineering / computer science positions so they are pushed down into lower paying jobs that are not yet worth replacing by automation.

Profits go up, wages stay down, and as few workers are hired as necessary.

Work your ass to the bone for less money than you can afford to live on your own with, so the fat man upstairs can hoard more horseshit. And its all apparently okay.

Low minimum wages and forcing people to work has and will always dumb down America if they can't get an education after their shitty useless highschool career is up

How are we going to rise from being the 30th worst in education if our people don't even have time to stop and smell the roses? Much less take a piss.

Are people going to better their lives or are we simply telling them they 'better' better their lives?

We used to be a country that did amazing things but now the corporate environment is static, high school diploma useless etc. Freaking Europe is advancing ahead of us and it's a land mass made up of like at least 7 different languages

I went on a dating website the other day, then I check to see who i was competing with, It was laughable the only people my age on there fit the same mold, it's like america doesn't even want males in the office anymore....

Things are good here I agree. I disagree with people who wish to make it harder for me to make a living with higher taxes and excessive government regulations however.

How do you not see the "entitlement mentality" in yourself when you're demanding that poor people not be paid higher wages so you can pay less taxes, why are you entitled to paying a lower tax percentage than the poor? Taxes that will no doubt go toward public assistance that is only being given out to the same poor people because you refuse to let them have higher wages.
