anyone invest in the gold or silver market?
    #16433601 -

I've been reading about it.  I was wondering if anyone has any experience with it?  Did you buy coins, bars, or let the bank or whatever handle it for you?  I'm just curious.

I went with generic silver bars that were about a dollar over spot. but it was more about protection than investment. Just make sure you look at a lot of buyer reviews if you order silver or gold online.
And save all of your pre 64 quarters and dimes.

Agreed 5 years ago I was looking at investing about 5-10k into gold. I'm currently kicking myself for not doing it. However I didn't at the time because I was afraid it was already fairly high how much higher could it go? I think it's going to keep rising but at this point it's hard to invest that kind of money into a relatively small amount of gold. Gold goes up in price when the price of the dollar goes down. In the end it really doesn't gain a lot of value it's kind of a measure of inflation.

If the dollar was to crash at least if you owned gold you'd have something that was worth something. Buying it for that purpose however is again taking a huge risk because if the dollar does rebound you will lose a lot of money.

dont mess with coins, typically they're well over spot, if you really want to
invest in gold buy from people at around $10/gram for 14k, $8/g for 10k, get
a test kit to make sure it's real. melt the chit down, skim off the crap and
cast bars

It's a little pointless in my opinion, to buy silver and gold.

Most people buy silver and gold as a security net if the standard currency gets devalued to such an extent that they can't afford living needs, or if the economy outright collapses.

But in those cases, nobody is going to want your silver or gold. Because you can't eat it, build a shelter with it, heal an infection with it, etc. Pieces of silver and gold are utterly useless for survival. If there is no food and people are starving, no sane person would trade you your 30 gold coins for a can of beans. Since the beans = life, and they can't eat your coins to stay alive.

The only alternative would be to try to sell them to members of a more economically stable nation, but to have that work out, you would have to actually go move to that nation, cash in with their currency and then live there with the currency you get. If you wait until shit hits the fan to move to another nation and try to cash in your silver and gold, well good luck.

The best security net in uncertain economic times is to learn survival skills and invest in a nice bug-out setup with quality tools, in my opinion.

If the interest to invest in silver and gold comes purely from just wanting to make some moolah, and it isn't about planning for a rocky road at all, also consider that as the value of our currency continues to drop, the price of gold goes up. This is not because gold is suddenly worth more, or is disappearing at alarming rates. It's just because our currency is worth less and less. So the price of gold might go up over the next five years, but so will the price of everything else. It ends up smoothing out.

well, if society collapses i'd rather have any wealth in small valuables that i could hide easily. property and food can be easily stolen at gunpoint, as can the weight and greed of gold and silver. i'll stick with obsidian for trade purposes and tourmaline for expenses.

wow how strange, when i was a kid i used to go down to this creek and dig into the side walls so u could get down to the water easier ect.  Well we seen this black rock and started digging it out thing was huge never got it out digged forever, one day was fishing with a net with someone and i wanted to leave and he wanted me to stay so i took off really fast i was bearfoot of course, and well i climbed right up that shiney ass rock and cut the fuck out of my toe needed stitches.

To this day i never knew what kind of rock that was but always wondered, so is that stuff worth anything?

Because tone is not well translated into text, I just want to state upfront that I'm speaking with only benevolent intentions.

You need to start thinking in terms of all-around survival. You say you don't want something that could be stolen at gunpoint. Why don't you have a gun? No matter what you have, if shit were to hit the fan, you will need to be able to defend it. Hiding it won't work out well for you in the long run.

For starts, cities and neighborhoods will be highly dangerous. You wouldn't want to stay in your house in such an area if shit had truly hit the fan. People will move in armed mobs, and houses will be preyed upon.

Commerce will also take a nasty turn. There wouldn't be stores accepting minerals for food. The armed mobs will ransack the stores violently, again in a genuine SHTF situation. Thus commerce would likely turn into the bartering of goods with actual value.

And again my point is that for survival, minerals and such 'luxury' goodies will be worthless. When money buys nothing, nobody will care if what you have in your pocket is worth X amount of dollars. What they'll want to know is: Can they eat it? Is it medicinal? Is it a tool? Is it a weapon? Can it make fire (heat/cooking)?

Furthermore, if you try to commence commerce with some less-than-good souls, chances are they'd rather shoot you and take whatever you have, not trade with you. (Again, in a genuine SHTF situation).

So my sincere advice is to learn how to sustain yourself. Learn how to hunt/trap efficiently. Learn what plants are edible in your area, and which ones have medicinal uses. Learn how to build a shelter. Learn how to make a fire without a lighter. Get yourself some quality tools and supplies and make yourself a nice bug-out bag. And get yourself a reliable weapon or two for self-defense.

It can seem overwhelming to someone new, but whatever you can learn between now and something unfortunate is better than nothing at all. A lot of it is also much easier than it might seem at first. A ferro rod lasts a long time, and with a good knife you can use it to stare fires easily. You just make wood shavings and dried plant matter (like dead pine) to make a kindling nest, and then create sparks using the rod until you get a small flame. Then add small pieces of wood and build up. It takes a little practice, but eventually it's a cakewalk. As an example.

Nothing can give you the security (and feeling of it, to boot) like being able to survive in the wild. You can leave a dangerous urban or suburban area behind and take to safety in the woods, and be just fine. It also makes for some awesome camping experiences, on the lighter side of things. It really feels 'human' and down to earth to do it the way our ancestors did it out there, to conquer the wild and thrive and know you can do it. It's a great feeling.

Just sayin.

you're pretty well right for the most part, the essentials will be
essential, everyone needs food but if the shit hit the fan and people are
looking for food of course the first things hit is the grocery stores, gun
stores and liquor stores and warehouses for the canned and dry goods, a
great number would die off because they simply have no survival skills, on
the notion of bugging out you'll encounter small communities pooling
together for defense and farming. the most valuable commodities overall
will be drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee and ammunition. those drugs include
the illicit as well as pain meds and antibiotics

regardless of what anyone says, gold will be virtually useless as a currency,
if you had a ton of gold and you're starving you'd give it all up for a few meals
