microwave popcorn?
    #11815437 -

Hello got a few half pints going that ill spawn to coir and popcorn jars, was wondering if washing the kernels in a light soapy solution would do good to remove the butter or do they like butter?  Would the soap harm the popcorn, myc, etc?

Why would there be butter on corn?

It shouldn't be a problem to get things such as "untreated" popcorn, rye seeds of wild bird seed.

But who knows? Maybe butter is a super booster? I have no idea:wink:

I know, that soap is used for the hydration of straw, but it would probably be a problem with grains, because of the PH-value:shrug:

If you reallly want to use pop corn just buy a bulk bag of it its SUPER cheap. But I would advise using Rye or WBS instead

lol wild bird seed bells? those are bound with suet or something, I definitely wouldn't use that.

listen to these other guys, a 2 lb bag of raw popcorn is about a dollar fifty, WBS and Rye are cheap too. Don't go wasting your time/spores using whack spawn.

Don't use buttered kernels. I tired once. I put them in water to soak and I figured I'd wash them off when they were done soaking. I left them for two days and when I looked at them again the whole top of the bowl was covered in mold. EWWWW! I tossed that shit out.

Hm...what troubles me isn't the fact that you're using popcorn with butter or a wbs "bell", whatever that means, but the fact that you titled your thread "microwave popcorn" which would imply that you are thinking about microwave sterilizing popcorn.  This is possible to do, but very difficult to pull off, so I would recommend either using a pressure cooker or at the very least steam sterilizing.  Check out this link for some info on no pc popcorn:

Well, because he mentioned butter it could be, that he wanted to use popcorn that can be made in the microwave (to eat it)

He's talking about microwave popcorn, that comes bagged, salted and buttered, ready to pop a single serving in the microwave. It's way more expensive than bulk popcorn, and your going to need boxes and boxes of it. Why anyone would think of using it I don't know.

youre going to spawn cakes into coir and popcorn jars (coir and popcorn in a jar)??? If this is your first grow i would fruit the cakes as cakes.

I think you got the world confused with this post...

what I meant was that I wanna spawn most of the cakes to coir and then case that with peat/verm, but then instead of making up more jars I wanna extend them by transfering some of the myc to grains (prior to spwning to the bulk).  Even though it is a first attempt I think by putting the eggs into multiple baskets I am ensuring success at some level.  The reason I asked about using microwave popcorn (the kind you pop in the bag) is bcuz I have a lot of it, maybe I should try some of it (just to see if it's viable)..and then try some bulk corn too like you guys mentioned.  Does popcorn have endospores?  Can I just steam sterilize it or do I have to pc it?

You have to pressure cook your grains for proper sterilization. I think using microwave popcorn kernals would be a huge waste of time, not to mention popcorn is tricky to get right in the first place. Im not sure if you should really spawn a cake to grains...i would start by multispore inoculation. How many cakes do you have and how much bulk sub do you plan on spawning your cakes in? Its good to have a high ratio of spawn to bulk so that the substrate will colonize quickly/evenly and beat out contamination. If you only have a few cakes, then you shouldnt spawn to a large amount of bulk sub.

You should take sugared popcorn, as it has more nutrient. And peanut butter as casing layer works wonder too…

Like I said in my first post, you can steam sterilize it, but it hasn't been done much and can be tricky to master.  That shouldn't stop you from trying it, and you can refer to that link I mentioned for the logistics of it, but be forewarned that it's not going to be easy and you do have a greater chance of failure if you choose to pursue that method.

I was considering skipping them but it can't hurt to try, I think instead of just soaking them I'll boil them and then tape the lid shut while they soak before loading/pc'ing.  If I do see any molds I'll just dump it nothing lost but a little corn.
