Okkervil River sounds American to me. I don?t know what that means, per se, but then again I don?t know really know what ?America? means to begin with. What I do know is that there is something enigmatic, traditional, and altogether insane about Okkervil River?s music that reminds me of the American psyche stretching from the heartland to the cities. The instruments and arrangements on their albums pay homage to lost Cold War ages that gave birth to rock and roll, while all this traditional musical cloth is really wrapped around a subtle, elusive, maniacal nature contained within the mind and the larynx of Will Sheff. The poetic nature of his lyrics combines with his ability to take his voice to the depths of his various emotions in order to produce a sonic brainchild of paradoxical proportions. In the arena of live performance this effect only intensifies, as the band drifts into a purposeful looseness that only lends itself further to the notion that Okkervil River?s music comes from a portion of a mind that is simultaneously whole and shattered.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

Thanks man and I'm glad you dig them. I'm trying to write about music more lately.
