Opinion on pay rate for a carpenter * 1
    #27514159 -

I've been working in construction the last two years, residential, worked for a framing crew and a few GC crews doing additions, remodels, renovations.

I worked with this company I'm at now for 6 months.

First job that hired me gave me $14 an hour. Was making 16 when I left my last job. This guy started me out at 16 here and he's paying me 18 right now. So he's given me $2 raise in the last 6 months. 3 raises.

Avg salary for a carpenter in my area is $19

Honestly I think I'm worth $20 and I can't say I'd be surprised if he moved me up to it soon, maybe within the next 6 months.

Lately I've really been doing a lot and stepping it up.

Kinda like the last 2 years worth of experience all of sudden came together and now everything is clicking a lot faster and easier. Starting to grasp the whole picture and be able to work through it alk. I know for a fact I'm a huge asset to my boss.

So my question is this, looking for someone who's been in the trades for 10-15 years preferably and familiar with the current market or at least knows what is what, what people get paid, maybe has employees of his own.

Say for instance I can be left at a job alone, tear out the old siding, replace all the rotting sheathing, replace or reinforce any damaged 2x4 or framing, install new framing if needed, new sheathing, tyvek the thing, (this particular house was wood siding on a chimney build out) install all the PVC trim, install all the siding, fix the cause of the water damage (where the roof butts into the chimney walls running off the roof, the metal was letting water back behind the siding) caulk everything and get it all buttoned up and finished and ready to paint.

Old falling apart rotting structure replaced/refinished looking all nice and new.

Worked on the job alone, left alone with a new guy, left alone to finish the job, easily responsible for 50% of the job or more, did it efficiently and timely etc, could have did this whole job on my own. Took the new guy 6 hours to do siding when I did more in the last 1.5 hrs of the day than he did in 6.

I was the one on all the ladders two stories up, I was on the roof fixing and replacing all this shit, I was on ladders on the gazebo blocking access to the chimney. I'm not complaining, I enjoyed this job and had a good time doing it.

So being one of the first jobs I've ever seen where I knew and could do everything on my own from start to finish, made me wonder what type of wage that deserves and if I'm being under paid or if I'm being paid fairly

I know the guy who quit before me got paid at least $20 and he's scared to climb a ladder won't even get on a roof let alone a steep roof two stories up, couldn't have did what I did, no question about it. But he was with the company 2 years me 6 months and there was shit he knew I didn't mainly like electric or plumbing.

There's more to carpentry than just this job and really we do a wide range of work like the typical electric, plumbing, some simple HVAC, even masonry and some roofing.

Lots of shit I don't know in the trades.

But carpentry I'm not bad. Basically can do all the work if given a foundation to start with in terms of flooring, walls, trusses, roof sheathing, all exterior trim, siding, flashing, can do windows, doors, can do all interior trim.

Can do drywall if I have to, can do flooring, installed cabinets, done q little bit of tile work, but kitchen / bathroom remodels I'm a little more green to. Electric, plumbing, HVAC, still real green to

But hoping there's someone experienced who can at least say what wage you'd be paying someone to do a job like that alone

Long ass post I know... Probably won't get a response

"As of Nov 5, 2020, the average annual pay for an Union Carpenter in the United States is $55,965 a year. Just in case you need a simple salary calculator, that works out to be approximately $26.91 an hour. This is the equivalent of $1,076/week or $4,664/month."

You are well below the average, you are making like 39k/year.

My advice with any job is to just start applying elsewhere, see what is offered.  You have nothing to lose as you have a job too so go interview, see what they offer, then say you want X.  My dad worked for his company for 30+ years and they compensated him right, the world isn't like that anymore though and that is just not the case 99% of the time now adays.  If you die they will have you replaced within the month, you need to be cut throat, worry about YOURSELF and YOUR bills.

You should shoot higher than 20/hr during interviews, better yet, start your own business.

Well thats part of why even though there are higher paying jobs available and I know I could get some of them, I've specifically taken less pay in order to work for someone like my boss who is small time ma and Pa and runs his own business as I'm hoping this sacrifice in pay will pay off with experience and ability to learn more quicker, see more details in running your own business, have a better opportunity to work up and take on more responsibility

My goal is to basically see what my boss does, how he does it, be able to go out and do it myself.

Working in the union I don't see that setting me up to be able to go out and take jobs on start to finish on my own

Like you say, my personal goal is self employment

My hourly wage goal currently is $25. I think I might be able to get there with this guy within a few years. If not I'll go elsewhere.

But he's a really good guy to work for, lots of pros to this position even if there are cons such as pay rate and benefits

I'm feeling like if he will recognize and move me up $2 as I keep learning and growing he will compensate me

This guy wouldn't be able to replace me in a month though.

At least not for what he's paying me.

Part of why I'm starting to think I'm more valuable than I've been giving myself credit for

At the same time I still am green in terms of my own personal knowledge goals

I think I have been decently cut throat.

I've left multiple companies and have been able to work from 0 knowledge 14/hr to 18/hr in 2 years, can be left to run a job

It means a lot to me to accomplish that

Also that wage comparison assumes no overtime

So the hourly rate for an annual salary would assume no overtime hours.

I could be wrong but I think that salarly includes a certain number of overtime hours

And I thought it said avg hourly rate was closer to 19, could be wrong

Not disagreeing though that that pay isnt shit and you can't hardly get by on it.

Especially now days. And if you have more responsibility than just yourself.

*What I read assumed just under 10k in overtime

"Within a few years"

You have to understand though, the more you make now, the sooner you can retire/live better in retirement because you can invest more today that will grow over time.

I am money hungry.  I don't have a job I love but I have a job that makes money.  I have hopped around, burned bridges, made and lost friends and had stress, but my goal is to make money so take what I say from that angle.  You will get experience everywhere you go.  I can't help but look from the "If I have to be here, I want to maximize the money I make for the hours I put in"

"Part of why I'm starting to think I'm more valuable than I've been giving myself credit for"

You are paid well below average for a carpenter, remember that.  That would eat me up at night and I wouldn't let that happen.  You learned who you are, you know you can run jobs yourself.

The bottom line is it's your time to go interview now.  Maybe your boss is a cool dude, but the pay isn't right.

Listen to what I say you won't regret making more money, ever.

Bro they're paying chik-fil-a workers 15/hr at some places.  You are underpaid.  Don't get taken for a ride, it's time to interview.

No trust me I 100% understand and agree

I've even considered changing career but I want to commit at least 5 years total and see where I can be.

I do what I think will help me accomplish my goals

My long term goal isn't a certain pay rate even if short term (say 2 years) my goal is $25.

My long term goal is knowledge or experience.

I will sacrifice pay now in order to gain that instead.

I'm my view that is how I accomplish my longer term goals faster (for instance taking my own jobs and working for myself)

So for now I'm happy with exploring what this can be where I'm at.

I had a guy paying me 17$ under the table at one point which is a lot more money.

But not as beneficial learning experience of knowledge building.

The guy I'm with is very successful, old school, known to be trustworthy, quality, he's worked on multi-million dollar homes doing all interior trim for years in the past, I've worked in homes I would never see with certain companies or positions that might pay more.

Able to learn everything he knows.

He's just under 60 I believe. People like this are dying out. 3rd generation carpenter.

Good man.

Gonna learn what I can with him for a while.

No offense but I know my goals and I know what I'm doing.

I don't make decisions about life choices based on shroomery member telling me find a new job.

Again no offense.

Was asking to know what the job I did is worth in an hourly rate.

Not leaving where I'm at any time soon either way.

Bro, I am not offended with you being ok with being underpaid.  Do you have a 401k?

I think you're potentially being taken advantage of and don't realize it.

Also, it has nothing to do with shroomery members and more to do with personal finance and life goals.  You seem to be ok with being underpaid and that's alright if you think it's worth it for you.  I, personally, do not

Probably

But again, my view is on learning the most the quickest.

That's my goal.

And I've worked at about 6 different companies in the field over the last 2 years so I am relatively familiar with what people pay, at least around here

Framer took 3 years to get to 19.50 I was working under

Guy here sucked but lied about experience and got $20 after two years

Started at a company guy was there longer than me making less only because I wouldn't accept less than $16 when he hired me

What field do you work in?

Thank you shit exactly what I was looking for

I just Wana know that.

You guys aren't getting it man. I could make more in a factory right now too. Would never in a million years do it.

Coulda did that years ago, get offers for jobs on indeed all the time, plenty of opportunities. It's not about that.

Working here now is an opportunity.

And like I said, I'm going to capitalize off it and gain as much knowledge, skill, and experience, as I can, where I'm at.

First place out of like 6 I could say that about.

I had a boss bluff me with an initial raise evaluation.
I told him my worth.
He said “well, you gotta swing the bat”.
This was at time of lesser unemployment and more advantageous for employers.
You have to put your feelers out elsewhere, and familiarize yourself with more within your industry.

Idk why you seem to be getting offended man.

I already have looked up averages and I stated what it said.

Avg was 19.9 or something per hour and 9.9k or something overtime

I was asking what someone in the field thinks the work is worth

Not what the avg salary for a carpenter is

A warehouse gets me where in 5 years?

I worked at one once for like 2 weeks, pay was min wage starting, kid been there like 2 years they had given him like a $1 raise.

Making this all into something it's not about

People in the field what would you pay someone doing that job per hour

That's what this thread is about
