Night shift anyone?
    #2552461 - 04/12/04 09:47 PM (20 years, 7 days ago)

So i'm getting a job working the night shift, 12 hour shifts. I'm wondering if any of you have or do work the night shift? Pros and cons? I'm a little worried I won't be able to adapt to it, we'll see.

I've worked three jobs pulling night shifts. You may not sleep the day after your first shift, but you will the second, and after the third day you'll be fine.

Pro's:

It's easier to get up at 5 pm than 5 am.
Sleeping from 8 am to 2 pm is more refreshing that sleeping from 10 pm to 6 am.
You get off of work as the sun comes up (very nice)
Night shift is less professional, there are less people to answer to.

Con's

You become someone isolated with day people
Weekends suck because you may get out of schedule
You become allergic to sunlight and thirst for blood

sleep as much as you can on your days off, bring food and caffine, and talk to other people working ovenights or jump around if you start to get tired.

usually on days im working i will only get 4 or 5 hrs sleep a day (but thats only really 2 sleeping periods), and then i just stay up and turn myself back to days for my days off.  then i stay up as late as i wasnt and sleep as long as i want and im usually back to nights by my first day back to work.

how many days are you going to be working? if its more than 4 fuck it. try to get them all in a row if you can.

thats a tough call cause you cant really turn around to days much even if you want to. do you have someone in the bed next to you who will be seriously affected too? its something to consider. my gf works days but she works from home so its not really a big deal cause we still get to see eachother.

it really depends on the person, i have worked 3 night jobs, and i can say that i absolutely love it. gettting off at 6 am or earlier is always interesting, just as the sun comes up you get off work, beat the crowd to the resteraunt for breakfast or whatever,

what will you be doing?
i find jobs where i have to interact with people, my waiter job,was alot more fun than being a janitor at night and cleaning the same damn floors over and over again day after day.

you can easily loose your reality if y oure not carefiul, which isnt always a bad thing

I worked a night shift a couple years ago and didn't mind it at all.  Aslong as your shifts are relatively steady, it should be all good.  Right now I work at a 24 hour restaurant and they toss my shifts all over the place..overnight one day, evening shift another day..day shift the next..   :nonono:
