This is how the Curiosity Rover will land on Mars

Digital simulation.

The car-sized rover, nicknamed Curiosity, is expected to touch down on August 6, 2012. I presume it'll find an advanced alien species living below the dirt. We will transmit an attempt at contact... but their only response will be a Youtube URL to a Black Friday video.

Holy fuck. Imagine if people stopped watching the kardashians on tv all day and actually worked towards bettering our species. The things we could do.

I will be thoroughly impressed if all that plays out without a hitch. I know with the last one they used the giant air bags, but I assume that limited the amount of delicate instruments it could have. This approach will hopefully allow the mission to be even better than the last.

I've read the Curiousity is too heavy for the airbag procedure. The new method looks more graceful and orchestrated.
