How was it not necessary on that play?  What else was Lewis supposed to do?

Bullshit.  It's not wrong. Read the rule.  Just because refs don't call it consistently doesn't mean it shouldn't be called when it happens. He led with his helmet and that is a penalty.  If you have a problem with it, blame the rules, not the refs.

Christ, even one the Raven's beat writers from the Baltimore Sun even defended the call.

Lead with his shoulder or play better coverage. Basically, play within the confines of the rules.

The call was a helmet to helmet hit on a defenseless player.  When in fact, Collie was not a defenseless player as he had the ball in his hands.  I'm not sure what football you watch but when tackling, helmets collide.  The bullshit call was the defenseless part.  Lewis separated Collie from the ball who was not defenseless in anyway.

I like how Buck and Aikman are going out of their way not to give Favre credit for being amazing.

I will agree with this, but even if the WR is not defenseless, it is still be a penalty with the same outcome (minus fines & suspensions).

You really don't see all the helmet-to-helmet hits happening all the time?

Not tackles where the defender is leading with the helmet.  I see tackles all the time where the defender leads with the shoulder and the helmet to helmet it incidental, but that isn't a penalty.

It was quite possibly the worst call I have ever seen.

Have you been watching this ravens entire season? They get calls like that nearly every game.

Quote:
Helmet to helmet is a penalty.  It may be a dumb penalty, but when it happens the refs have to call it.

Less than five minutes after that penalty, possibly on the next drive one of the ravens recievers (clayton I think) got hit in the exact same way but no flag was thrown.
