wa7sum: you you should leave 6-8" bove the soil level so it will be best able pup after it recovers, but be sure you can take a large enough cutting for propagation aswell.

jong: the chlorophyll containing outer flesh [just under the waxy cuticle] is generaly regaurded as containing the most signifigant levels of the active alkoloids.

you should probably leave 12" or more above the root. 18" would be better.

Also, you can use the Tip from your cutting to root out a new cactus. So remember to make the cutting far enough from the base for pups and remove the tip from about six inches down for a new cutting. So your consumable piece will have both ends cut. Just a way to increase individual plants via propagation. Later.

I cut one down to 3" and it is doing fine. My two largest pedros were started by taking a 4" center cut and laying it on its side to root. That was the first thing that I noticed when they arrived from the nursery. The best part about doing it this way is that you don't have a cut end o top of your cactus that may collect water or just look bad. So you really don't need a very large cutting to start new plants.

The two in question are the two in the large black pots, one on each end.

Here are some better pics of those two large ones that were started from four inch cuttings.

And this pic shows how much this one has grown since I got it last spring. The broom stick was put in there to help steady the cactus until its roots took hold and the top of it was perfectly even with the top of the cactus. I just measured it and it is just over a foot of growth.

Sorry, I just had to show 'em off a little.

They look nice.

Looks like some winners. Is that one around 3 inches in diamater?

Are you asking if it is OK to root them on their side? I have done it before. But if you want your new cutting to grow faster it is better to root out an apical tip. Those sideways cuttings will grow pups. But those pups will not be fat or fast growers compared to a six inch tip ready to root. Remember, that when the light levels are low, winter, it is harder to root clones and get new growth, either roots or vegative. I have found that when a piece is taken for The Trip, Do not use that tip for tripping. Let it grow. It will root just fine and since it is the tip it will grow fat/fast. Do you have a problem, in the south, with high humidity? When I make soil I use at least 2/3 playsand and 1/3 potting soil/cactus and succulent for optimal drainage. You know the stuff that is used in kids sandboxes. I have noticed that when my soil has too much potting soil in it it doesn't drain properly. Stay away from adding lots of vermiculite or perlite. THey hold water. Hope this helps. Good luck, meeting him. Later.

What I have noticed from my collection is that the new pups that grow from the original plant that a cutting was taken from grow just as fast as if not faster than the end cutttings. Now of course a center cut cutting will take longer to get started just because it has to heal on both ends.

I just use plain old potting soil for my cacti. At the bottom of my pots, though, I have a good amount of lava rocks to allow for better drainage. The potting soil I find around where I live usually has plenty of sand in it already. I also find that it is better to use clay pots if you have them over plastic pots, but they can get expensive and they are alot heavier. I use a lot of plastic pots because of price but I make sure to add tons more drainage holes.

I can't say this is 100% right, but, deep enough so the cutting won't fall over. Thats about 3-4 inches maybe less if it is a small one. I can see some planting them as much as maybe 6 inches. But, I don't see why you need to plant it any deeper than it needs to be to stand upright. Later.

Recently a neighbor had a piece of cactus, not san pedro, and had it stuck less than 2 inches into the ground...

I was walking at night and accidentally tripped over it, and it came up with my shoe. I put it back in the ground so as to not feel guilty, and just a few days ago I was outside and saw the same cactus... It has grown about 3 feet taller by now.
