"It took me a while to realize they were not really insights, but intense feelings brought about by powerful metaphorical/schizoid thinking. If becoming God is an insight, I reject it. If experiencing the oneness of it all is an insight, it doesn't have any meaning to my sober mind or my life in consensus reality." "To be honest, my most intense and productive growth came from ordering dozens of $4 textbooks off of Ebay. I'd buy the thickest and cheapest biology, anthropology, psychology, sociology, philosophy, etc. books and just skim them all the time. That's fucking growth. My college education can't compare to the years I've spent reading textbooks for fun. Nothing has had such a tremendous impact on my understanding of the world and my place in it. Psychedelics can't hold a candle to it. And you're right, I sound gay as hell, like a fucking 1980s Reading is Fundamental public advertisement, but nothing has affected as deeply as reading textbooks. I'll always be a skeptic though, I question a lot of the claims in textbooks and call bullshit on them with the same fervor (but less frequency) as I do on the psychedelic experience." For me, quitting psychedelics was motivated by feeling undeserving of the beauty/awe experienced on the trips--it felt false to me that "knowledge" and "deep appreciation for the universe" could be gained through a method as straightforward as frequently dosing on mushrooms and LSD and thus becoming an overly sensitive scared shitless ambivalent schizoid personality, on the verge of calling suicide hotline if any real effort/work was necessary. I agree that reading great works other people have written is the first start to climb out of the comfortable self pity state--I better fucking kick my ass. I live in society and am at the mercy of the protective structures formed by past generations--I must contribute. Thank you. Last Edited 10/26/13 10:39 PM |

For your statements. "we have yet to reach the stage of societal maturity where we can distinguish between what we can do and what is the best choice to make. just because you can be online all day doesnt mean you should be online all day. I'm thinking that 30 years from now society will have evolved past it's fetishism of electronics and find a happy balance between time spent with technology and time spent without. We'll see the negative effects and effectively balance ourselves out. then again, maybe not. perhaps we'll all be caught up in some orgiastic maelstrom of technological obsession and disappear all together, letting the machines we've created live the lives we once use to" |

You gave insightful relationship advice, and recommended a great tale, and I find myself rereading passages of it now to derive pleasure lol, and want to read more books of this nature
