" Dude, you're a shill of corporate America. I make my own toothpaste with mint I grow on a co-op farm, and flouride I extract from municipal water supplies by way of fire hydrants. I brush with a toothbrush I found in a dumpster 8 years ago. And if I ever have any tooth problems, I'll be damned if I'll pay some asshole with a fancy college degree when I can just pull them out myself. In all seriousness, I think that PDU has the right idea with responsible consumerism. When you buy a product or service, it's like voting.. If you don't like the fact that company X makes disposable razors, buy a straight blade from company Y. If you don't like the fact that an automaker makes cheap cars that only last 5 years, pay more for a reliable car from another automaker. We must remember, however, that in order for our economy to function, there needs to be some degree of consumption. Otherwise, money would never change hands.. It's all well and good to steal your neighbor's wifi, but if everyone started to do it, there would be no wifi to steal. The remaining people who did pay for internet service would have to be charged more to pay for the provider's infrastructure. If no one went to restaurants, thousands of people would be out of work, with no money to purchase other goods and services, which would affect other peoples jobs, so on and so on. If everyone bought clothes from thrift stores, no new clothes would ever make there way onto thrift store racks. At any rate, if you want to "mooch" off our consumerist society, it's all well and good, but we shouldn't knock people who contribute to it. " |
