Because being materialistic ultimately leads to egotism and unhappyness but being poor inevitably leads to death so without the life to provide the framework for the philosophy of thinking there is no thought pattern to compare over who has a soul or not over morality of financial ethics. In short, no one wants to be a shallow thin prick but often times it is better to take the money and sort out right and wrong later then to wonder where your next meal is going to come from.
