What’s up, everyone? I’m new here, and I’m looking forward to trying my hand at mushroom cultivation. After doing a lot of reading (both here and elsewhere) and watching a bunch of YouTube videos, I’m starting to piece together my plan and gather materials. Here’s my plan, in a nutshell - hoping you can critique it and share some tips if you have any. 1. Mix up 12 half-pint PF Tek jars. 2:1:1 mix (vermiculite:BRF:water), 1/2” layers of dry vermiculite on the top, lids with 4 holes drilled around the perimeter, and tinfoil “hats” on top. I don’t plan to use any micropore tape. 2. Cook the PF Tek jars in my Presto pressure canner (per the Tek). 3. Build a still air box (per the simple AF Tek) 4. Inoculate my 12 PF Tek jars (6 with one strain, 6 with another) in the SAB. 5. Once the jars are fully colonized (plus one week?), hydrate some coco coir (per the bucket Tek). 6. Assemble and fruit two shoeboxes with grated PF cake (per Shaper’s SFF shoebox Tek). My hope is that I’ll get at least 4 clean/colonized jars of each variety so I can run them side by side in separate shoeboxes. Maybe that’s optimistic. I also plan to try my hand at agar work, kindof in parallel with the experiment I described above. I’m thinking that I’ll inoculate a total of 8 plates (4 with one variety, 4 with the other) in my still air box at the same time I’m inoculating the PF Tek jars. Then I’ll take a stab at “cleaning up” the culture by repeatedly transferring clean bits of mycelium to new plates as they grow out. My main goal with diving into agar is just to keep this hobby running without the hassle of ordering syringes that can’t be mailed to my home state. This brings up a question… Rather than attempting to clean up the multi spore culture by repeatedly transferring to fresh plates (sounds kinda tedious and potentially disappointing…), what if I just take live tissue cultures from a few mushrooms that pop up from my initial BRF cake/shoebox run? (Assuming I have at least a little bit of success….) Would this be an easier way to “perpetuate” my setup using the genetics I’ve already purchased? Please let me know if you have any comments, tips, suggestions, etc. Cheers, and Happy New Year! Edited by SonomaFungi_707 (01/02/24 04:08 PM)
