To stay and appeal a civil judgement in the federal system, you generally have to deposit the value of the judgement as a bond that will be refunded if the appeal succeeds, or paid to the plaintiff if it doesn’t. Usually the court asks for another 20% to cover interest and other costs to the plaintiff. Essentially, if Trump intends to appeal this case, he has to pony up $100 million in cash, or get someone to deposit cash using his properties as collateral. Considering that he may soon be disgorged of his properties, he may have no choice but to use cash. Regardless, he will lose access to that money almost immediately, assuming he is going to appeal.
