Gun Rights and Privileges
      07/11/14 11:37 PM

I just found this sub forum. Normally I post in OTD, but even I occasionally want to say something important.

(This is written by me. An American that lives in the United States of America. It doesn't mean it can't apply to you if you happen to live in another country, but because of our unique gun laws and rights, it doesn't me it does. It doesn't mean that you'll agree with what I say if you are from this country, although I am going to do my best to refrain from interjecting much of my personal opinion as humanly possible. Most of what I am about to say is fact.)

Everybody who owns a gun sets an example: At checkout in a store that sells a firearm to a new owner or at a gun show; By properly or improperly storing firearms; By correctly or incorrectly transporting rifles and handguns to and from gun ranges or hunting sites. Don't drink while hunting. Don't smoke joints on the way home from the gun range. Don't get into a screaming match with somebody about "your right". Don't discharge firearms in a reckless manner. A gun owner can set a good example or poor example that can send a message to somebody who is undecided or thinks negatively about gun ownership in today's society.

Currently, in the United States, there is an idea shared by a few that guns are causing violence and turmoil. This is because of terrible situations in today's world of horrific violence and death that are exploited in the media, and almost instantly rekindle the gun control debate every time. A lonely kid who needs psychiatric help more than a rifle. A disgruntled employee. A damaged military veteran. An estranged lover. There is a hurt individual behind most of these incidents that only wishes to show others how they feel. Sadly, they feel like they want to cease to live and are willing to take the life of innocent people to show the world their pain.

There is absolutely NOTHING me or you are going to be able to do for these people. They are sick. They must seek help in order to receive help. It also does not seem feasible to restrict their access to firearms without infringing upon the current rights of those who are mentally stable enough to possess a gun. There are couple of patchwork suggestions to this problem but considering that most mass shootings in the USA happen in "gun-free zones", these are merely just suggestive solutions to changing a culture of being a helpless victim to random violence:

  1. Obtain a concealed carry permit, and carry where legally allowed. This allows citizens to police themselves. If you are somewhere where an active shooter is present, you have put yourself in a position to stop the danger to you and those around you.

  2. Open carry when legally permitted. This may deter somebody who may be planning to harm innocent people, or even just put a stop the the stray thought in somebody's head.

The biggest tool in our disposal is education. Teach those that you love and hold close firearm safety and proper handling techniques. Teach your friends. Teach your neighbor. The only influence that people are going to receive about guns from media is their inherent danger and ways they are misused. The old guy who stops a robbery barely makes rounds on Youtube, but the Santa Clara shooting makes national headlines. There is terror at the root of that story; a kid who wanted to terrorize those who represent what he felt had terrorized him. When a child sees that, it creates an impression. An impression that paints guns as the tool of meaningless death. It is our job to spread the word of their use as the ultimate defense and means of survival.
