A friend asked me if I'm aware how dangerous it is to pick and eat wild mushrooms, and cited the following recent incident as a reason I should reconsider. She really believed that this guy was an experienced mushroom hunter. As near as I can tell from the article, the guy who wrote The Horse Whisperer picked and ate a toxic Cortinarius on his brothers estate, simply because someone told him that they were chanterelles and porcini. Noobs (I consider myself among this group) be careful! Consider each mushroom carefully, based on its own characteristics, not the one's that you are hoping are there. If your mushroom doesn't fit all of the characteristics in the key you are using, consider it for its beauty but don't eat it. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femai
