In my experience, familiar entities are what IFS calls parts (Internal Family Systems). IFS is one of the therapy modalities being used by MAPS to help with psychedelic journeys. A part is a conscious entity that lives in you. It could be a reflection of your grandfather (mirror neurons are really cool), a favorite mentor, or the anger you inherited from your dad. It could be as simple as your girlfriend's voice in your head when you're downstairs seeing your first Enoki fruit (all of this is my own experiences). Parts can surprise us. Even though they're generally aware of us, the ego (which is the default mode most of us live in), is not generally aware of them. So, they feel like someone familiar but that you don't recognize, and they do things that don't feel like they're under our control. I encounter parts daily, sober or otherwise. What I think of as foreign entities, in my exprience, have been parts that have been put inside of me with malicious intent. Terrorizing blacks and hippies, for example, was the intent of the drug war when Nixon enacted it. And this was the first entity I encountered that felt alien. 100% unfamiliar. I said some of this a few pages back. But I thought it was worth reframing and reiterating for anyone else exploring their mind that might appreciate the insights I've gleaned over the years. 20+ ayahuasca trips. Lost count of everything else a long long time ago. -------------------- Listen to the silence behind the engines' noise. Jesus, Sweets, listen. Hear it? It's a love song. For whom? You are loved. ~ David Foster Wallace, Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way
