At the age of 12, I was diagnosed with Spinal Muscle Atrophy, type 3, also known as Kugelberg-Welander Syndrome. This rare form of Muscular Dystrophy currently has no known course of treatment excepting pain management. I have been prescribed Celebrex in the past, as well as Omeprazole to combat side effects. I currently refuse pain medication in light of my recent psychiatric diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, and subsequent prescriptions of Depakote and Seroquel. I am now 24 years old, and have used marijuana in a medical capacity since I was 17. It is the only treatment that I have found to be effective for both pain management, and psychiatric maintenance. I am not a proponent of full-on legalization, as this is a substance which is often abused. I am requesting that for my sake, and the sake of others in my condition, medical marijuana be legalized as proposed by the Cathy Jordan Medical Cannabis Act. This act would provide a safe and effective treatment option, as well as a source of livelihood for those individuals, like myself, who haven't much else to look forward to. It would be an absolute blessing to be able to legally grow my medicine, and incorporate with other medical marijuana patients in my local area. As it is now, I do not operate machinery and am a ward of my parents and girlfriend. Please help me to become something greater than the sum of my parts.
