Mould in uninoculated pf jar after 3 weeks

Im helping my friend out with his first grow and hes not been having much luck.
Ive put it down to that fact that hey did not use a glovebox for inoculations. But i just got a message from him saying he checked 2 jars that were not inoculated and they have the same mould that was in his knocked up cakes.
He uses a vegatable steamer to sterilise and has been doing it for 2 hours.
No canning jars availible, so has been using drinking glasses with foil lids. which i have used myself with success. The only difference is i used a pressure cooker.
Anyone have any ideas? Maybe should bake the dry verm layer.

Sounds like incomplete sterilization or maybe the foil lid was loosened at some point in time, has your friend got a camera?

I done a little bit more research and found a post from tahoe that had tested out the vegie steamer method. He found that a vegie steamer will mainatin 212f which is fine for steam sterilisation.
Since my friend is sterilising for 2 hours. I think its not his sterilisation method.
Im going to suggest that he make sure his foil lid is on much tighter and tape it to the glass, to ensure that no moisutre gets inside.
Also, there are no inoculation holes until injection.

Well from my research it all depends on the substrate he's using if he's using whole grains such as rice, wbs, and corn etc.. its highly recommended to pressure cook it since steam steralization doesnt really cut it for whole grain products if he has no other choice and has to steam it, i would seriously go with pf tek with rice powder vermi mix also make sure where ever he is doing the inoculating to be sure to do it in a small closed enviornment such as a bathroom, pantry, or closet.

Sterilization is rarely complete. What we're looking for is a two to three week window of opportunity to get our substrate colonized. If it sat for three weeks before contamination showed up, that's normal. RR
