Random Mushroom ID's..
    #8986580 - 09/25/08 08:36 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Ok here is a crap load of Mushies I took pictures of in Sept and was just curious on a general idea of what they could all be and if edible?  This is gonna be a project.  It will help me to properly ID my photo folders also.   Thanks everyone!

Mushroom 1:  Found on the East coast in the grass.  The first one looks like a turtle shell or something.  I believe these may be Boletus Chrysenteron  Though notice the oxidization in the last picture.  I did not see this in any of the pics of the Boletus Chrysenterons I had seen on the internet.  Any ideas fellas?

Mushroom 2:  Found these huge fellas in the Grass also on the East Coast I believe they are Amanita Thiersii based on my research but as always not 100% sure.  Any takers?  Go ahead take a wild guess I don't mind....

Mushroom 3:
Ok....this was also found in the grass on the East coast....it was a really cool mushroom Very solid and hard to pull out of the ground!  It reminded me of a tooth and when I pulled it out it REALLY resembled a tooth due to the stipe of the mushroom looked like a plauge ridden root of a tooth.  (I can relate) :frown: No guess on this one.

Mushroom 4: Found these guys on the east coast in the woods near a river where it usually floods and is usually really wet or damp.  They were under some tall grass hard to spot.  When I go back there I think there will be plenty of shrooms but this is the only time I have seen anything back there probably since it is way to wet.  They do look a lil familar....please say they are not active!

Mushroom 5: This was found on the east coast growing on a tree stump all by itself. It was a cool looking lil guy though.

Mushroom 6: Found this in my buddies back yard east coast under some pine trees or something to that effect.  I want to say an Amanita of some sort but probably not.....I like the split in his cap though!  :super:

Mushroom 7:  East coast found under a log right next to the river.  When I had seen them instantly I was reminded of Vanilla Pudding.  I prefer chocolate but when I seen these I was they put me in the mood to eat some Vanilla pudding. Mmmm!

Mushroom 8:  East coast found on decaying wood.  I know it may be hard to tell since they are so small and I didn't pull any out to check the stipe but any guess's?

Mushroom 9:  Found East coast in a Pine forest of some type.  Was all by itself. Not the greatest shots.

Mushroom 10:  East coast found in the grass.  I thought its color was interesting.  Not sure if that is it's actual color or if it was due to the climate.  Not great shots either...

Only 4 left!

Mushroom 11:  East coast found in the woods in the grass.  Amanitas?

Mushroom 12:  East Coast found growing out the base of a dead tree.  I think they were dying already?  They are a cool pinkish color which was interesting. Really soft and flimsy.

Mushroom13:
East coast found growing out of the same tree as the pink ones above.  LMAO They look like turds and were as hard as wood.....I think they are mushrooms?  I hope I wasn't touching shit...  I only got 2 pictures and the base was like intertwined with the wood....Strange.

Mushroom 14:  And last but not least East coast found in a park growing in the grass.  Again I think they are a Amanita's maybe?

Hooray you made it to the end!!!  :whoo: And thats all of em! :drooling:  A general ID would be awesome and I can research further based on the Species.  Or a positive ID would be even better!   I feel like I think everything is an Amanita anymore.  :foreheadslap:  Ok.....Goodnight all!

Cool pictures. I wish I could throw some more advice out there, but I just wanted to say that.

I think you got the first two, if not you are very close.

Nice.

#2 looks like Chlorophylum molibdites, #3 Gandoderma, #4 maybe Tricholoma, #5 Pluteus cervinus, #6 ?, #7 Stropharia of some kind, maybe Stropharia hornemanii.  Nice pictures!

Sweet!!!!  Thanks alot guys!  I will work off of that!  And thanks for the compliments on the pics though I can't take all of the credit for the pictures.  My ex gurl was with me and she took a few of them herself (since she took a couple of courses in photography).  Dead Mans Fingers   I like the name of that one!  Alan.  As always you are the Man!  Not in a literal fashion either   I hope to someday return the favor to you all!  :stoned:  I shall be riddling you with more ID's again after the Fungus Fest this weekend!!  Take care everyone!  :leaving:

A fun thing to do at fungus fairs is to take a picture of every collection and post them on mushroomobserver.org.  Also you can make a thread about it here and [img] include all the pics.  I did that at the fungus fair in Mexico recently and I'll make a thread about it soon.

Also its fun to hang out near the ID table, you can learn a lot there.

Also I usually make a stack of shroomery business cards with the URL to the hunting forum and give them to people who seem cool and put a stack of them near the actives.

1: I am gonna lean more towards Boletus Calopus due to the oxidization I had seen in one of the pics and plus the colors match a lil better.

2: I am gonna have to agree with you guys it leans more towards Chlorophyllum molybdites than the Amanita Thiersii just because Amanita Thiersii seems to be kind of shaggy looking though most of the pics of the Chlorophyllum molybdites seemed to have rounder caps compared to the pointed caps in my pics.

3: I am 99% this one is Ganoderma tsugae!  How do you guys know this stuff??? At first I was like "are these guys nuts!?  None of this things looks remotely like my pics." But then upon further research I found it in there but these ones growing out of the tree were upside down so I guess mine was just growing out of a root in the ground so actually the photo of my Ganoderma tsugae was actually growing side ways and pics of the ones on the tree were actually right side up....I guess

4: Inocybe!?  I just read on this forum that the Inocybe corydalina is slightly active!?  Is this true?.....:emocry: Because they look kinda close?  From the pics I looked at alot looked clos The Inocybe phaeosticta, The Inocybe friesii, The Inocybe lacera, but I think it is a toss up between The Inocybe rufoalba and the Inocybe virgatula.  Any suggestions? :flowstone:

5:  Pluteus Indeed!  As would say Weiliiiiiiii.... I would say a Pluteus flavofuligineus or aPluteus cervineus...you be the judge? Alan e'll be the jury and I my friend am the exicutioner. I'm hit right now...:stoned:

6: I think it was either an Agaricus augustus but I leaned more towards an Agaricus Blazei due to my recent encounter with The Augustus (coached through it by Alan) the Augustus I had seen stayed real close the ground and were a darker color though the conditions of the Agustus I had seen in the park was much more of a suitable habitat. The pics I have posted here the ground is dry and doesn't seem to be a great habitat maybe that could change the features of the same agustus? But I think I had seen a pic of a Older Blazei with similar cracks as the one in my picture. Lack of humidity I guess?

Ahhh! Overload....I'll be back ta finish my research and continue babbleing.....Thanks guys! :whoo:

The active Inocybes are very rare and the toxic ones are very common.

I see you have gotten really confused trying to ID Inocybes.  The confusion will increase exponentially as you learn more about them.

Cool Thanks for the advice!  If I could print some buisness cards from here I would love to promote the sight a bit but alas I have no printer Ink.  That stuff is ridiculously expensive!  :grrr:  Yeah I plan on hitting up the ID table and listening to the lectures and everything.  It seems like a cool day out. And they have an active table!?  Thats cool I was kinda curious if they would inform you on the actives and all.  Since ya get ta keep what ya pick I wonder if that apllies to the actives also or do they take those away from you?  (keep em for themselves)  Any suggestions on some general characteristics to look for when seeking actives?  I know the blueing of the stipe when bruised or blue at the base of the stipe but that is about it Oh and that they prefer decaying woods? And also too look in bark shaving piles next to the shedding trees.  I hope I am not breaking any rules by asking those questions...:-/ Oh and they give cultivation tips which is really sweet!!  It shall be a good day!

Yeah those Inocybes had my head spinning just a bit!  I just compare pictures for the most part and when I think I have a close to positive ID that is when I will look more into its habitat and characteristics and all to search for a match.  I can be lazy...  But that had alot that looked similar....am I gonna have to purchase a micro scope?

And they have an active table!?

Most fungus fairs do.  If they don't, just move the other mushrooms over a bit and make a spot where you can set down your actives.  Then point out that some mushrooms don't have labels and ask them to print some up.

They must let you keep them since it would be illegal for them to take them away from you.

Learn all the mushrooms, that way they won't all look like actives.

There aren't really that many, probably just a few hundred that occur in your area.  First learn to look at a mushroom and put it into the proper genus.  Once you know the genus its usually pretty easy to look up the species.
