hello all
i hope this is not been repetitive post, if so sorry. im recently recovering from a serious spinal injury that has had me out of farming our little friends for about a year. i still have some old syringes that i kept tightly in a couple of bags and then in a tyvek envelope and sealed the envelope. if i remember correctly i they should be no good at this point or at least very weak. now since im still half disabled and in quite a bit of debt cause i was physically not able to work and healthcare isnt free in the USA. i would like to use the to save some money as i have almost none and need to desperately get back on my feet. at the same time i wouldn’t want to start something up only to have contam or other problems due to old/weak spores. I did get quite a bit of cant both inside the FC and the incubator last time cause I wasn’t able to keep up as I was not even able to sit up at the time. So I very afraid of using anything old cause I don’t have the cash to try this again. At the same time reusing any equp. I have would save me lots money that I could defiantly use right now. What do you guys think? Should I go all out with new stuff or use some/all of the old? And advise would help. thanx......

i would at least try with the old stuff. it may take awhile but with agar and isolating sectors its possible to get some good stuff with what you got.

I've had great success with syringes well over a year old. The amount of viable spores definately diminishes over time, but if they were stored in a cool dark place, you should still have PLENTY of viable spores in those syringes.
Put a few drops on agar, or cook up an LC mix, and squirt a small amount in. If your syringe is still viable you should see germination and growth within a few days.
The only way you are going to know for sure is to try it out mate. But in all likelyhood. the syringe is just fine.

thats a good idea, ill try some LC. Ive also got some LC that about a year old what do you guys think of that one. it doesn’t look to bad. Its an old malt jar. i dont see any solids or anything at all in it for that matter. the liquid does look a wee bit cloudy, or maybe i just cant remember what it originally looked like. For some reason I remember it looking as clear as say, light beer. you think the LC is still good?

I would prep one grain jar and inoculate it with the old syringe. If the grain jar takes to the inoculation, then go forward with prepping another 10 jars. Do a G2G inoculation and have a total of 10 good jars. If the old syringe didn't take, then you only lost one grain jar and about a weeks worth of time.
