I've got a very small pink spot on 2 of my cakes. They look healthy however they have a little bright pink spot the size of maybe a BB in a place.

its pretty hard to see.

to re clarify they aren't even the size of BB's more like the size of a pink pen head. The cakes were fully colonized for about 6 days before I birthed. I didnt think they were susceptible to mold at this point.

It's probably just metabolites. Mycelium often excretes some odd colored stuff...
Pic is blurry..

Geotrichum is that color, so watch it very closely, especially if it wasn't there when you birthed the cakes. Geotrichum mycelium is white, so you wouldn't have seen it before birthing, but the air could well have stimulated it to begin sporulating. If the spot grows or the pink looks like it's above the mycelium on the cake(indicating contaminant spores) as opposed to staining within the cake(indicating metabolites), it's time to toss it. RR

alright I just got home from work. Its odd it looks as if the mycelium is pink but it looks like the spots that are pink are pieces of vermiculite that mycelium didnt totally colonize on. I used a very coarse verm so some of the larger chunks petrude from the cake a little bit. I dont kmow.. its on afew of my cakes and doesnt seem to be growing. I guess I will wait and see. I seperated the cakes with pink from the good looking ones. Basically here is my question. If it is a contamination will it spread further?

Vermiculite isn't bright pink ... a nice thought, but it probably isn't verm.

If it's not growing, it probably isn't mold. I referenced 'lipstick' mold above. Geotrichum is the correct term. RR
