Mushroom hunting 15 April 07 - ID help?
    #6790378 - 04/15/07 12:52 PM (16 years, 9 months ago)

Alright folks, I’m new to this but I have read the FAQ and I have some findings for ya’ll.

Sample 1:

Habitat: Open grassy area 15-20 meters from woodline, NW Florida, less than 25’ above sea level. Less than 2 miles from inland waters, some 10 miles from Gulf of Mexico.

Gills: Reddish-brown, some separation between gills and edge of cap, separated

Stem: Solid, white, almost 1” diameter

Cap: Almost 5” diameter, slightly peaked, some golden-brown fading to butter color at edges

Spore print: Still working on ‘em, will post update when they’re done

Bruising: No bruising that I can see, its been almost an hour since I cut the mushroom and a half hour since I cut the stem to take a spore print and the stem is still white

Smell: smells like mushrooms from the store.

This mushroom was all by itself in the field, picked the day after some strong thunderstorms moved through with about 1” of rainfall. Today is bright, dry and much cooler than it has been lately. Highs in the area were high 70’s-low 80’s F, today it is low sixties and much drier. Field drained well, it was not muddy.

Sample 2:

Habitat: Open grassy area also some 15-20 meters from woodline. NW Florida, less than 25’ above sea level. Less than 2 miles from inland waters, some 10 miles from Gulf of Mexico. Good drainage. The area where these mushrooms was found is not a pasture, but it may have been at one time. It is now simply an open field with planted grass surrounded by native woodland.

Gills: Black. Separated.

Stem: Striated. Varies with size of mushrooms.

Cap: Varies in size: 1” diameter to almost 5” . Golden brown, more brown on top. Generally flat shape. Cap is almost lifting upward to cone-shape on one of them.

Spore print: Still working on ‘em, will post update when they’re done

Bruising: Yes, bruises blue/black.

Smell: sweet earthy smell. Still smells like mushrooms to me.

These mushrooms were in a group about 200’ from the first mushroom. They all appear to be in the same overall species. They look happy and healthy, too. There were some red ants crawling around the gills of one, but otherwise nothing unusual. The field is well drained grass. The area where these mushrooms was found is not a pasture, but it may have been at one time. It is now simply an open field with planted grass surrounded by native woodland.

Sample 3:
Habitat: Open grassy area also some 5-10 meters from woodline. NW Florida, less than 25’ above sea level. Less than 2 miles from inland waters, some 10 miles from Gulf of Mexico. Poor drainage, mushrooms were saturated from the rainfall. There were also a colony of maggots inside the mushrooms. The stems were nasty and full of maggots, so I cut these at the caps.

Gills: Black. Hard to see because of moisture they are gooey. Might have been nice gills when these mushrooms were dry.

Stem: No information here, the stems were eaten by the maggots.

Cap: 2” to 3 ½” diameter. Golden brown with maybe a darker brown on top, like Sample 2, but wet and gooey.

Spore print: Still working on ‘em, will post update when they’re done

Bruising: ??? Just blackish where handled/cut.

Smell: Earthy mushroom smell.

These mushrooms were found approximately 2 miles from the other mushrooms, but in substantially identical conditions, except that the drainage was not as good in their location and that the mushrooms were infested by maggots.

I am guessing some kind of agaricus, some of which are edible.

They all look like some species of Agaricus to me as well.

They are Agaricus, probably all the same species.

We call that free gill attachment.

These might be good edibles, or they might make you throw up. They will not kill you.

Thanks to you all for the ID's.

I was skeptical about Agaricus at first because of the bruising (which made me think these might be some kind of psilocybe)... but now I have my spore prints and they are brown!

So agaricus it is. :/

Maybe I'll throw them into a salad and see how edible they are...

and then again, probably I won't.

Definitely Agaricus.

When checking Agaricus for bruising, cut them in half vertically and scrape the inside with your knife edge hard enough to bruise the tissue. Color changes can take up to an hour.

The first one looks like there might be some minor brownish bruising around the edge of the stem

The second one seems to be producing rather clear reddish bruising.

The last one is so far gone that I probably wouldn't bother picking or attempting to ID it beyond genus.

As far as edibility, David Arora refers to Agaricus as the "lose your lunch bunch" because so many of them will cause vomiting and gastric upset. The rule used by the best Agaricus IDers I know is if they smell good they're OK, if they smell bad (phenol, metallic, library paste, etc) then they're poisonous.

In general Agaricus are difficult enough to ID accurately that I only eat a few distinctive species. There are too many good to eat mushrooms that are far easier to ID to bother with the tough ones.

Happy mushrooming!

hahaha yeah I know what you mean. I find so many different agarics around here and im always so tempted to eat them, but then my stomach tightens up at the thought of what they might do and i chicken out. Except when i find sidewalks/field mushrooms, aka bitorquis?

A. bitorquis is one of the more distinctive Agaricus species. The problem with them is that I usually find them in places where the habitat is likely to have been contaminated with something poisonous, rendering the mushrooms poisonous also. For example, habitats immediately alongside roads have a good probability of being contaminated with heavy metals such as lead (gasoline used to have lead in it, so car exhaust had lead in it). The mushrooms growing there will concentrate the lead, and your body concentrates it as well. Lead poisoning is something I want to avoid at every opportunity.

Happy mushrooming!

The yummiest mushrooms have to guard themselves from being eaten up prematurely by their natural urban predators:
Mushroom Hunters.

Besides.... a little lead never hurt anyone!!

j/k j/k
