Nov. 1 Hunt for Azuren's
    #6238017 - 11/02/06 05:13 AM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Was in search of Azurescens around Astoria area, I have been 3 times each time in different locations in the area with nothing.

Habitat: Woods - Found in a small "basin" scattered around. Ground covered with moss and leaves.
Gills: white, gills are free.
Stem: White and hollow, strong, slightly enlarged at base.
Cap: Brown to copper with a slight shine, smooth, , 1 - 2 1/2 inches in diameter.
Spore print color: very light print, but dark spores
Bruising: No color change was observed.
Location: Hammond, Or.

Wouldn't have cared about these but after noticing the purple gills/spores I thought it was interesting.
Habitat: Woods - Found scattered around under ferns mostly. Ground covered with moss and leaves.
Gills: dark purplish, gills are free.
Stem: White/light tan and hollow, strong, slightly enlarged at base.
Cap: yellow, smooth, , 1/2 - 2 inches in diameter.
Spore print color: purple dark spores
Bruising: No color change was observed.
Location: Hammond, Or.

-- i realize they are bad pics

Habitat: Woods - Found under/near cedar, on higher ground. Ground covered with moss and leaves.
Gills: white, gills are free.
Stem: Light Tan and hollow, strong, slightly enlarged at base.
Cap: Brown , somewhat rough, 1/2 - 1 inches in diameter. China hat shape
Spore print color: came up with nothing, will let sit longer and give feedback if needed.
Bruising: Stems showing small amount of darkening after a few hours.
Location: Hammond, Or.

Would really apperiacte any input on azuren's around Astoria area. I'm new to hunting, spots would be Astounding and I do know how to keep my mouth shut. It's not by any means a close drive for me, little over 2 hours.

The first mushroom looks like a Pluteus.

You guys are such post whores!

Anyways, Torpid, you need to be searching the coastal areas. This includes any dune grass along the beach, and the chaparral areas around the beach. I would imagine they would need a little bit more rain, although I am not certain with that.

Did someone say post whore!?!?!?! :dogpile:

Thanks for the tidbit o' advice angryshroom.  I'll be taking the dog to the coast (love that excuse) this weekend for his walk.  And I might look on the ground a little bit too since the rains have arrived.

Yep, did an expedition last weekend.  Not much up at all, certainly not like I've seen in some years   Some heavy rains are needed for sure.

I don't know about the first one. The Pluteus species around here just grow straight from decaying wood, not really the ground. The "Spore print color: very light print, but dark spores" is kind of confusing, with mention of white gills.

Seems like Stropharia is a possibility on the second one as well. There are Stropharias that look like that.

I was pretty sure I didn't find any Azuren's. I was really hoping those last 3 where them though, but the rough cap made me doubt it. I have researched them, I'm not a stupid poster who just picked random ones. All I have researched is the actives. Thought the Pluteus would be worth the try to bring home.
I have one question though I was unabble to find after a little searching. I guess I don't know what it means for the gills to be attached or free?

Those last pics I left overnight to get a print and there is one but it's very light. It looks to be brown in color but I think it's just becuase it's so light.

Maybe I was wrong to say the gills were free....

Cut the cap and stem centrally to make to identical halves.

Look at the cross-section of the one or both of the halves.

Do the gills meet the stem or are they seperate from the stem and go up to attach to the Pileus (cap)?

That is how you find out whether or not they are attached or free. Some species are so obvious that a disection is not necessary.

Good luck in the future. Your finds are not P. azurescnes or any other active. You finds could even make you sick.

Later.

We just got a good couple days of rain, so I'm going to try and make the drive again tomorrow. This time much more prepared with a home made guide to all Oregon Psyclobes. Of course I will still be asking for identification.
