wild oyster mushrooms

Hey all, i'm finding hella oyster mushrooms here, but in possibly questionable condition. I'm used to seeing them soft and light-colored, but the ones i'm seeing lately have darkish brown, sorta brittle margins, and the outer flesh on the cap is sort of tough, tannish and wrinkled. I am thinking that this is just because of the cold, it's been freezing at night lately. The flesh on the inside is still soft and white and smells oh so good, and it's not rotting or being eaten by bugs or anything... I hear folks harvest oysters all thru the winter in places where it gets this cold, so I am guessing that i'm just being a good mushroom hunter and being overly cautious (a good habit). Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I've noticed that oysters from the same log will be white in the summer and brown in the late fall and early winter.
What you are describing sounds normal to me.

It is possible that you are finding Panellus serotinus like bmarley3434 says, there's lots of them out this time of year, but I don't think they look much like true oysters (Pleurotus ostreatus and its close relatives). I was referring to Pleurotus in my earlier post. For some reason they seem to get darker as the weather gets colder. The tough wrinkled brittle margins could possibly be due to cold dry weather. A photo would easily clear whether you have Panels serotonin or a true oyster. There are also some inedible mushrooms which resemble oysters.

we definitly live in a mycophobic society and that is really sad.

I agree that we've got a mycophobic society... I think mushrooms need respect, but not fear. I guess that goes for most things in nature...

I think I've found something similar- but lets us all call it anise and parsley instead. Deformed margins- wildly upturned and sprouting abundantly in the same locations you found oysters but with a very different appearance- don't worry- they're great with pasta.
