I use rye. With the root cause I once read many people using it, and I found a decent priced supplier (actually from a miller) which makes it pretty cheap. It think for me it comes down to availability, ease of processing, price, compact storage volume, nutritional value, preference, multiple usages possibility (I actually also like the taste of it and I think it is healthy for humans too).
Here another thread (pretty old though) of interest: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24565771

Super savvy folks here grow cubes on whatever is most cost effective that month. I feel like a short summary of peoples opinions on grains is as follows:
rye is bougie.. people love how it looks when its hydrated right. It has a nice outer paper-y shell that makes it break up and shake well during colonization shakes. its often kinda spendy. wheat is sorta similar.
Oats is the opposite... cheap but seems to be the most difficult to kill endospores in sterilization and has a reputation as hard to fully sterilize. People do prevail and feel like they are killing it.
Wild Bird Seed: (which is mostly millet, milo, sorghum) these seeds are small and as lore has it, easier to sterilize. Sought after for growing cubes and as a side note, need no cooking to hydrate (huge advantage)
chia seeds and pumpkin seeds: not mainstream sheeple? go for it.
The PF tek you might be using is something people marvel at, as rice flour and vermiculite has an amazing characteristic of not needing full sterilization, or even clean spores to grow a few magic toadstools. Its magic in and of itself... but both those short cuts are very poorly suited for any other aspect of this hobby.

I've used every grain and for myself popcorn is what I prefer.
If your going to make 30 monotubs there's more cost effective grains.
For me I love being table to go get a few bags of popcorn at the grocery store and whip up a batch of jars that night.
It's usually really clean and easy to hydrate.
Not saying it's for everyone but the way I do tubs it's perfect for me.

I've used just about every grain except rye....just can't find it here, and I'm not paying $1/lb.. I prefer wheat because my local source for wheat is usually very clean, and I can walk out with 200lbs of grain for under $40 most of the time, plus I've got hydration time down to a t.... was using barley at one point because it was cheapest thing I could find... wasn't really a fan of barley because it is just like oats, except a lil smaller and was usually dirtier than any other kind of grain I use

Loved popcorn because you could PC it in a jar with water to hydrate, drain and sterilize without breaking the grain open easy
Until rye took the crown
If you take the time to boil it and hydrate it correctly and let it dry on the outside before loading it.
It is perfect spawn that is hard to screw up
Rye is cheap but sometimes hard to find
WBS is smaller sure but millet has a tendency to break open easier and your left with a starchy mess/nightmare if your not careful
They all have their benefits but rye and popcorn are harder to screw up and popcorn is easy to find

I wish I could find rye locally, I hear it's nice to work with... but the only way I can get it is to have it shipped in and that costs way too much for my cheap ass

I don't blame you if you can get 200lbs for 40$
For people that don't need 200lbs
88cents a pound isn't bad for what you get.
I'm all about cost efficient but at some point, how cheap does it need to be unless you screw up a bunch of grain spawn all the time?

I always want to try to beat what my lowest total costs are... it's kinda fun to me seeing exactly how cheap I can produce for... plus prices for bulk tanked in my area, so the cbeaper the better🤣

I like wheat. I like it because I’ve learned how to properly prep it, and it’s pretty cheap in bulk. Most any grain will work for growing mushrooms. Availability, cost, and your ability to properly hydrate it are what matters most.

Yeah but for the beginner I'd say popcorn or rye but that's just because they seem to be easy to work with, cheap enough for normal use and easy to find at least for popcorn
Plus they are one of the most common grains for teks or videos such as RRs let's grow mushrooms

Millet. I pick it up a mile away straight from the grower. Clean and fresh and viable. 2 days in water. $10 for a kilo.

Edit: forgot to mention cost. 2nd edit: forgot to move the decimal point, $10 for 10 kilograms. Thanks HelloImBob.

10$ a kilo? That sounds outrageous unless I'm missing something
Rye is about 1$ a pound or 2$ a kilo
Popcorn is 4$ a kilo at most maybe half that it's been awhile
And are you suggesting soaking it for 2 days before using it?
That's not practical for most people that I'm aware of.
Rye or popcorn just takes 15-30 minutes to boil and your ready to go without planning days in advance.
If it was me I'd end up wasting the grain I soaked for 2 days if I didn't feel like bothering with it that day
Not to get into arguments over grains, just trying to figure out some of the suggestions
For a beginner personally I'd avoid WBS because it's easier to split grains while hydrating making a starchy mess you can't rinse away easy
Leading to either using grain you will regret wasting your time on or throwing out if you aren't sure on proper hydration
With popcorn or rye it's easier to tell when the grain is hydrated, you can even pull out a kernel and squeeze it here and there to check it
I know this topic is about everyone's favorite grain but everybody's favorite isn't always going to be the best or easiest for the beginner

Thanks for spotting that. $10 for 10 kilograms (22 pounds). I keep doing imperial to metric and Canadian dollars to US.

For me it's hard to beat no soak millet. Weight it out, dump it in. Same with water. I want to get a bag of rye but the feed sore has been out for a while, I think there's a lot of mycology going on in these parts.

I do love my oats, I have no problems with the brand I buy. 20$ for 50 Lb hard to beat. wheat and millet are my next go to's by price give or take. * like bods oats tek* I would use other grains if cheaper *i have in past loved rye*
I do 3-4lb bags @nearly same pc time as jars, Being its not in glass acting as a insulator it seems to work well. The bags stay hot very long time when packed "tight" in a pc . The overall mass vs jars....
Bonus. *100% does not matter * I'm not advising anything and overcooking is fine so why not right... If anyone wants to discuss Pc time length for bags vs jars and the effects of thermal insulation from glass , and volume of grains starting and holding temperature i'm all ears. I load my grains hot/ warm. I do not Pc for much longer if at all than is recommend for jars in a lot of cases. My pc is filled with more grain to water ratio than can be achieved from Glass + grain/water. lots of factors. I say it all boils down to similar required times @pressure. I can't find iron clad testing to show otherwise. I believe volume and density of bags is slightly offset by the lack of a thermal insulating barrier. The Glass heat retainment from glass is offset by the volume of grains soaked with water. I personally think all the recommendations to double pc time are overkill. and Cook grains a bit more then desirable.

WBS all day. It's easy as hell to prep. Super easy to get(walmart- wild bird feed) and it won't break the bank.
Plus I like to give my mushrooms an assortment of nutrients.
Bag looks like this

Funny. Prices here are a bit different, at least at my supplier. My rye (25kg) I get for 22 euro. Uncut oats 18 euro, cut oats 50 euro, corn 23 euro, wheat 27 euro.
Marketprices for farmers to wholesalers have dropped significantly Y2D (Jan-Jan) by the way: about 30% price drop. So if you buy wheat per 1000kg you now pay about 208 euro. I haven't seen a pricedrop at my supplier though .

Millet using Crackatoa's no prep millet tek, easiest method i've come across. 1 cup millet and 0.5 cup water into a quart jar, 90 min at 15 psi and you're done.
