Hello and welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately 'garbage-y', or anything other than the smell of fresh mushrooms is a bad sign. 'garbage-y' typically means decay/rot brought on by various decomposing mycelium (mold) or possibly bacteria. Nail polish remover is almost always a bad bacterial infection. Boozy is almost always a yeast infection (lol).

I'm guessing there's a battle going on in the uncolonized spots between mold and mushroom mycelium. Sadly, mold will always win that battle. However, the surface doesn't look horrible so I'd be cautiously optimistic that you'll still get some fruits out of that tub. Just hold the course, be patient and get a new project started.

I'm just curious what the 'risks' are of compressing your substrate? I smash the shit out of mine and never had any issues with it

Also, for your next go around, many people recommend that you don't shred your cakes but instead bury them whole in the coir. The theory is that by shredding the cakes you're distributing any contaminants that are already present in the cakes. I've seen it done successfully both ways (shredding vs burying).

Best of luck, keep us posted!

Ive heard that compressing the coir too much causes delayed colonization. Not sure how true that it. I have another (same day S2b as this one) tub that similarly stalled out w/o much colonization, except I packed the coir very tightly thoughout the cake with that one. Figured it was due to that, not sure.

I've been thoroughly shredding my grains so far, yea. Might have the try the whole cake method.

Also, in this case I only packed the coir tightly only around the edges to prevent side pins, and some of these spots are the ones having trouble colonizing.
